People really don't take a moment to reflect on the fact that those nukes are the power of god himself and if enough of them detonate in the right places at the right time, humanity would be sent back to the stone ages and it would take thousands upon thousands of years to get back to where we are today and that's only if Earth doesn't become a rock washed in radiation everywhere.
They represent the potential extinction of modern humanity and the death of the modern industrialized world if we're not careful. This show on the CW, "The 100", really makes me reflect on this simple fact.

While true, at this point they have saved as many human lives as almost any invention in human history.
Large scale military conflict between world powers died on August 6th 1945.
Per capita combat death rate among the worlds population is at a level never seen in human history.
Cold war was a hot one without nukes. And there would have been 5 more since, getting exponentially bloodier as technology got better until that equalizer was found.
Nukes are the only reason the 1950s, 70s, 90, and today don't look the same as the 1910s and the 1930/40s did.

M.A.D. was the reason for that. However, Mooslems don't give a shite about M.A.D., they will nuke us even if it means their countries are annihilated. I surmise KJU in NK has the same mindset.
It's a more dangerous world now.

Which is why they are as important to us now as ever.
The best defense is often a good offense.
The fastest way to lose control of their proliferation would be to neglect constantly upgrading your own arsenal.

To anyone who is interested in this subject, I cannot recommend highly enough Richard Rhodes' book "The Making of the Atomic Bomb." Came out over 25 years ago and to this day it still might be the best non-fiction book I've ever read. One of the few books that I can recall to win the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Find a copy of the original if possible, and not the 25th Anniversary edition, since that book omits the epilogue contained in the original.
