following a Trump tweet

quote:

"With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it ... may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS," Trump said over two consecutive tweets.

Why anyone was worried from the start is beyond me. When have these spineless fricks ever stopped anything?!?

It's not a flip flop. It's Trump training the dog to heel. And there will be more. The GOP congress and Trump will disagree on a LOT of issues in the coming 6 months.

It was an incredibly stupid proposal, even for the GOP.

Weren't all the Republicans for this, until Trump tweeted that it was a bad idea?

Quite a profound observation.

By "all the Republicans", I'm assuming we have a record of every single one in office supporting this?

Like I said, even so, they wouldn't have done anything. They never do.

A lot of the Democrats were for it. The head of the ethics committee (a Dem) just said on TV that there needs to be a lot of changes but he was opposed to the initial idea of the GOP congress.

no...

quote:

House Republicans meeting Monday night had approved, by a 119-74 vote, the amendment from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R., Va.) to a package of new House rules. Both House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) had objected to the amendment, urging a bipartisan approach to changing the office.

And Trump's position was the timing was bad, not necessarily the action. Overall public backlash had just as much to do with them pulling back as the tweets.

Dems in Congress were organizing to stop that and Repubs were barraged with angry calls from people on BOTH sides who were pissed about it as soon as it was announced. It had very little to do with Trump's tweet.

Yours is the third thread about this. Do you even slightly search before you start a thread?

You must read a lot of fake news. Trump's tweets clearly indicate he is for a change with the ethics group. His point was now is not the time as there are bigger fish right now.

Ole Hellen Yeller.... Yes, it was not a smart move right out of the box. Somewhere around the 1st quarter of 2018 with data showing that it is a redundancy of the House Ethics Committee present evidence backing up the waste. Then shut it down with possibly 1 member from each party to comprise a panel to hold oversite to the HOC and hold them responsible.
