what is on the chopping block? 1 trillion cut over ten years seems like a reasonable initiative. What things would you personally cut if given the power?

Congressional and Senate staffing budgets would be a start.

These frickers are trading on their time in DC to become lobbyists or politicians themselves so I think they can afford to be interns.

End our overseas wars and bring the troops home. As President, you could do that on day one.

Are you talking a $100 Billion surplus or a reduction of deficit by $100 Billion?

Every single department across the entire fed gov take a 10% cut to their budget. Happens all the time in the corporate world.

Nothing!
Not one damn thing.

FREEZE spending at current levels . . . . problem solved.

Close our foreign military bases, get rid of the Departments of Homeland Security and Education. Plenty of other small cuts if you want to take a few decades to go through every single item on the budget.

That won't get you there.

You have to address the 10,000 pound entitlement gorilla in the room.

ETA: I do agree with you though. Well mostly. There are some foreign military bases that make sense to support for force projection reasons. But they are few and far between.

ALL federal entitlement programs would be on the chopping block. Tell states that if they value entitlements, they fund and run their own program
Abolish all federally backed student loan programs and sell that debt to private banks. If state governments want to ensure student loans, they can be our guest.
Every IRS employee would be fired thanks to the passage of the FAIR Tax
Full legalization of marijuana at the federal level (or at least regulating it no more than say alcohol or tobacco)
abolish civil asset forfieture
Abolish all public employee unions and renegotiate federal employee pension plans.
Massively cut federal workforce.
I'd combine several dozen redundant departments
Eliminate redundant programs
Eliminate the Department of Education

That would actually cut a lot more than 1 trillion.

Cut Congressional pay, retirement, medical, and staffing by 50%. Go from there.

Defense spending is the biggest part of the budget. Its also the most important but there's certainly room for cuts. Corporate welfare is another big issue but hopefully that can be handled with tax reform.

Do away with taxpayer funded federal retirement pension programs. It must be huge because I can't even find a number showing the cost.

End all non Constitutional Departments. No EPA, Dept of Ed, FHA, VA, Budget and Mgmt., non of the BS add-on over the years.

The savings of getting back to small govt. and allowing the states to manage themselves would see the nation blossom like none of us alive today have ever seen. The restoration of freedom from massive centralized govt over reach would be awe inspiring.

No it's not. Not by a mile.
