Folks, this is truly stunning. They are trying to destroy our food supply! As someone who sits in this chair and covers the news each day, I see this firsthand. Heck, we covered this one just this morning.

I knew there have been a lot of food processing plants and other food supply buildings that have burned down, blown up or otherwise met a catastrophic, untimely end in the last 3 years, but I had no idea just how many until I saw it all together in one place.

I've been here to cover each of these, but it's really jarring when you see it all in one place.

Watch this video:

STUNNING: This map shows all the food processing plants that have either caught fire or been destroyed...

Is that a lot? I genuinely don’t know how to scale this. If there are thousands of plants across the country, 33 fires in a year doesn’t seem crazy. If there are hundred plants and we see fires in a third of them, that’s a different story.

Any context on if this an increase from previous years?

This was brought up before. I tried to do some digging to look at just chickens. It appeared that I was able to find a trend in more chickens being destroyed over time, for the past few years, but it's hard to say that's concrete evidence.

I think it's more likely we are seeing some effects of consolidation into fewer major processors / processing facilities. Like Boeing, they are trying to skirt the margins to max profits while getting sloppy in their operations, and thus we see some issues with fires and such.

I'm more concerned about the senseless and cruel treatment (and deaths) of these animals.

There is a definite effort to control food, but I think it's pretty inefficient to do that by destroying facilities. Much easier to do it through regulation, buy up the smaller pieces, consolidate to create choke points in the supply, etc. Some states like Oregon are making regulations that will force small dairy farms to spend $100k or more handle the water they use, which is effectively going to put them out of business.

The way forward is less government, more competition, less regulation, and more farmers able to take their products from farm to consumer directly. That is good for consumers, does not put the farmer under the thumb of the processor or gov, and decentralized food supply is certainly more robust if sabotage is indeed happening.

Fair enough. But I think my gut instinct has me on the other side. I’ve got to imagine with that there are a lot of these plants across the country, and within any given plant, there’s likely to be a large amount of heavy machinery that is very vulnerable to wear and tear, given the nature of the work. Combine that with the low-income labor force who works at these, and I can imagine neglect is a frequent problem. So it’s not hard for me to buy a story that these are always going to be locations that are extra vulnerable fires.

So absent more information on longer term trends, I’m going to withhold outrage on this one
