Explain this: MAGA hates The NY Times,but gives interview to NY Times

I find this odd. Why give clicks or publicity to an entity that you loathe. Could have given this interview to any other news source or paper.

I like that he does it because it's always fun to find out how they've spun the story and craft their fake news to try and make him look as bad as possible

He's a new Yorker and knows all the decision makers including himself sees the nyt is the gold standard of info.
Maybe the wall street journal was at the same level but the nyt sets the tone of the nation.
ETA: tone of the nation of people with power. Its the audience that matters.
Ask a hundred new Yorkers about William Safire and you will get an earful. Ask a hundred fly over red state people and who the hell is William safire.

So if he's going to go to give an interview go any "unfriendly" source, the NYT's is by far the most logical option.
