If I remember correctly, an early version of the war on drugs. Which is laughable considering the lifestyle of Elvis. Think he was even appointed as an honorary law enforcement officer.

Elvis brought him a pistol as a gift without considering that the secret service has quite a dim view of a citizen approaching the president with a handgun, regardless of the context.

And yes, Elvis was given a badge but no records exist of his ever participating in any enforcement activities. Speculation was he wanted it in case of any domestic or international "experiences" with customs and such flying with his stash of both legal and illegal drugs. Nixon admin. side of things was King of Rock n Roll vs drugs press opps to push their agenda.
That 4 part 8-12 hour series that was just on History Channel had a segment on this.
Basically, according to that 4 part series, the CIA is behind every outbreak of drug abuse in modern USA history. Heroin during/following Korean War and Viet Nam; CIA, LSD in 60's was former MKULTRA volunteer stealing some of the CIA supply after becoming civilian employee and then getting wild with it, then the CIA and South American cocaine involvement..and the current heroin stuff: CIA in Afghanistan and Mexican cartels/CIA.
