I'll admit that I don't fully understand the Supreme Court system. With 8 justices and 1 chief justice. I see that the court now has a conservative majority. Does this mean there are 4 conservative justices and 1 conservative chief justice?

School me a little, wont ya?

I would consider the current court to be 4-4 with an open seat.

So Trump's pick makes 9 (if confirmed by the Senate)? This now gives the court a Conservative majority?

4-4 currently, with a conservative most likely getting sworn in?

It's basically a 4-4 court now. But Kennedy and Roberts occasionally side with the liberal half. Thomas and Alito are the only diehard conservatives.thus court tilts slightly left.

It's funny that the 4 ultra liberals always vote 100% liberal together. Never stray!!

correct.

but the "liberal" judges NEVER cross party lines. The "conservative" judges actually try to apply the law regardless of party lines.

So it will be a majority conservative court, with two rogue conservatives that sometimes vote liberal.

Yes ish

I have no issue with a justice applying the law regardless of which way they opine.

The liberal judges never ever ever cross party lines is my point.

This is how citizens vote in elections as well. Conservatives will flip occasionally. Liberals will never cross party lines.

Same reason JBE is governor.

In general terms, you have 4 conservatives, 4 liberal, and a swing vote in Kennedy. He tends to go the liberals on social issues, hence he wrote the opinion on gay marriage and votes with the liberals on abortion issues and affirmative action.
