Racial and ethnic minorities accounted for 91.7% of the nation’s growth over the last decade; non-Hispanic whites accounted for the remaining 8.3%.
Related to their younger age profiles, racial and ethnic minority groups also include a higher share of women in the prime child-bearing ages of 20-34.
Another important part of the explanation for changing birth patterns is that minority populations are younger than whites, so are more likely to be having and raising children. Non-Hispanic whites have the oldest median age, 42.3, in 2011, according to the population estimates. Hispanics have the youngest, 27.6.
