The U.S. Army gets through a lot of ammunition thanks to the amount of training it carries out. But that ammunition doesn't come without waste which slowly degrades over hundreds of years polluting whatever ground (and nearby water sources) it happens to fall upon.

So the Department of Defense (DoD) decided to do something about it, and is requesting environmentally friendly ammunition for use during training exercises.

?

The request was made via the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Specifically, the DoD wants "biodegradable training ammunition loaded with specialized seeds to grow environmentally beneficial plants that eliminate ammunition debris and contaminants."

I have no words.

We already use ammunition that is extremely expensive and less effective because it is low-lead or no-lead. Why? Because lead is bad, mm-kay?

Lieutenant, go plant that bomb over there on that hill. And make sure it gets watered regularly.

So turn firing ranges into densely packed forests. Someone did no think this through.

In a related story the daisy cutter will now cause large daisies to sprout killing the enemy with cuteness.

They've been looking into this for at least a decade. It's nothing new. Military bases are environmental nightmares.

Yet plants continue to grow and animals are healthy. Maybe it's not quite a nightmare.

Yeah, buried drums of mustard gas with live 250 lb bombs on top of them are just like a fresh mountain stream. Or rocket fuel plumes in drinking water formations.

We should let ISIS capture some of this "training ammunition." By they time the realized it was non lethal (cant aim for shite) the Middle East would be well on its way to becoming one of the the worlds largest forests

How about we go back to using ammunition that fertilizes the ground by leaving dead bodies in its wake to decompose?

You laugh...

There are certain types of eucalyptus trees in Australia which choke out all other life by sucking up the water as well as secreting a flammable oil so that the tree combusts and spreads its seeds everywhere.

Seriously. Exploding fricking trees.

Dude, the military will shutdown a brigade level exercuse with thousands of troops participating at the cost of 10s of millions of dollars to the taxpayer if some PFC forgets to put a drip pan under his Humvee and it leaks more than half a quart.

It's generally not the current activities that are the issue. It's the mechanics that dumped MEK in the ground for 50 years.

Next they will be looking for bullets that stop in mid-air and just insult the person its aimed at, then fall to the ground and purify the soil or water it might fall into.

Golf balls that turn into fish food exist too.

It's a commendable project, make training ammo that is less environmentally harsh.

But it better feel like live ammo and be just as accurate otherwise what's the point.

Too many of y'all go nuts over the littlest thing.
