House Democratic leaders will encourage their members to oppose the Republicans's crackdown on sanctuary cities this week, but members will face no similar pressure on “Kate’s Law,” Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Tuesday.

“Kate’s Law is a little more complicated,” Hoyer, the Democratic whip, told reporters in the Capitol.
“Kate’s Law” would hike criminal penalties for undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of certain crimes, deported and then re-enter the United States illegally. The bill is named after Kathryn Steinle, 32, who was fatally shot in 2015 while walking with her father along San Francisco's touristy waterfront.

The suspect in the case, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, had seven previous felony convictions and had been deported to Mexico on five previous occasions.

The Republicans's sanctuary cities bill is another story: Democrats will whip against the proposal, Hoyer said.

Also sponsored by Goodlatte, the legislation would withhold certain federal grants from states, cities and law enforcement agencies that refuse to cooperate with federal officials in the detention or transfer of undocumented criminals.

That bill would also require undocumented immigrants convicted of drunk driving or arrested for “a particularly serious crime” be detained while they go through the deportation process.

Hoyer and most Democrats disagree, arguing that the sanctuary laws are necessary to foster trust between local police and members of the community who might otherwise be wary of cooperating with law enforcers for fear of being deported.

If they're illegal, they aren't "members of the community."

That's more liberal word games.

I would like to see a reason for opposing this. It essentially calls for increased penalties after an individual had already committed three crimes: initial illegal entry, crime, subsequent illegal entry.

The definition of "members of the community" is changing daily.

Don't need Democrats to pass this Bill. Trump will sign it.

The Democrats' (and anyone's) stance against Kate's Law is a testament to the wide chasm now existing between rational thought and what Dems want for the U.S. I don't think it can be overcome politically.

Recent elections have taught the dimocratix nothing, apparently.

The Democrats are not against Kate's Law. Did you read the article? They are not going to oppose it.

I really thought the narrative of murders by illegals against US citizens would have worked. It's amazing there isn't more traction from the constituents of their districts. Do they not GAF?

They blocked it last year. They want to oppose it but realize how that looks right now. LINK

They do, the party is weighing the continued loss of one voting bloc for the support of another.

So they are not going to oppose it? Yeah, thanks.

This is like the 3rd time you have just repeated what I said back to me today.

Yes-I read the article. The Dems are not going to rally their troops (whip) in favor of Kate's Law. Again-when such a common sense bill does not receive bi-partisan support from the leadership of both parties, then it speaks to the deep divide existing between those with common sense and those without common sense.

Then you ask why: because the Dems are afraid it will hurt their popularity amongst their new and future plantation dwellers-the Hispanics.

Sick.

Not rallying their troops to oppose a bill, but instead saying "decide for yourself" is about as bipartisan you are going to get these days.

From that gaggle, troof.

I expect very few Dems will vote for eith bills. Got to protect the voting bloc.

And that's terribly sad on a bill like this.
