Corps of Engineers blocks ND Access Pipeline

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe won a major victory on Sunday in its battle to block an oil pipeline being built near its reservation when the Department of the Army announced that it would not allow the pipeline to be drilled under a dammed section of the Missouri River.
The Army said it would look for alternative routes for the $3.7 billion Dakota Access pipeline. Construction of the route a half-mile from the Standing Rock Sioux reservation has become a global flash point for environmental and indigenous activism, drawing thousands of people out here to a sprawling prairie camp of tents, tepees and yurts.
“The best way to complete that work responsibly and expeditiously is to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing,” Jo-Ellen Darcy, the Army’s assistant secretary for civil works, said in a statement. The move could presage a lengthy environmental review that has the potential to block the pipeline’s construction for months or years.

Looks to be only temporary until an alternative can be developed, but still a speed bump.

Construction will re-start Jan. 21, 2017.

Yep. Been monitoring this one for stock purposes. Seems like a good time to sell, then buy as the stocks affected by this are on the way down. Though, I'd expect the new admin to get this pushed through.

All one has to do is buy O & G stocks now, because in 6 to 10 months the Mideast will be on fire and oil will approach $100.00 a barrel and gasoline in the U.S. will be around 4.00 to 5.00 a gallon just before labor day 2017. Gen Mattis and Flynn with make the Mideast great again

Looks like they are conceding a delay to get a majority of the protesters to leave the area. Once they clear out, the area will be secured and construction will resume.

Panic more... it's quite endearing...

I've seen a 60 acre wetland permit get turned around in a couple months. I've also seen a 0.3 acre permit sit at the USACE for a year. If the right people want it done, it won't take long at all.

Any particular reason you think the Mideast will be on fire?

I'm wondering about the timeline on all this. When did the pipeline company get permission to build the pipeline and from whom was the permission given. Did the protesters show up before that ruling or afterwards?

If the drilling under the river is going to occur on the dammed side of the Missouri, I would think the dam provides a layer of insurance in the event of a pipe breach. They could close the dam to protect the lower Missouri, including the reservation.
So why protest? And I'd be curious as to the technical reasons for the Corps not approving the plan under the Missouri.

They got a directive from the White House. It was on a radio network news show early this morning.

Are Indians anti-globalists?

If we're going to stop a pipeline because someone thinks it could leak and contaminate the water thus either killing or making people sick then we sure as hell don't need to be building additional highways because we know people are going to be injured or killed on them - and in short time.

Oh. So no technical reason. It's political.
How about the administration trust the Corps to protect the waterway. The technology exists.

So why did the Corps wait until a "potential" confrontation" is on the horizon? Why didn't the Corps stop it when the pipeline got the original go-ahead?

Or..as the brutal winter weather drives them off with a false sense of victory, the construction restarts with a perimeter of security to keep them from reestablishing a camp.
