I am a conservative, but somewhat of an environmentalist.

I don't think man is causing global warming, it just seems so myopic to think we could even if we wanted to.

That being said, what is the argument for coal? Even if it does very little to the climate, mountain top removal, black lung for miners, and the non-renewable nature of it, seem to make it less relevant today, than in the past.

I don't really care about the Paris summit and am all for putting America first. But if we have a viable alternative, what is the real benefit of coal? As a conservative, I don't think the government should step in to save a dying industry.

TIA

It currently provides 29% of the worlds energy needs, just behind oil at 31%.

Agree but it was more than that. The left wants to basically take us back 500 yrs and not use anything from the earth that may or may not harm the planet. They want to use renewable energy but don't realize the impact this has on the world's economy AND the eco system. One day soon there will be a mountain of Prius batteries sitting in India.

I didn't realize it was that high.

Good point here. Anyone know of a decent article that outlines the facts that tells me why opting out was a good move. I am curious.

Thousands of products are made with coal or coal by-products, including aspirins, soap, dyes, solvents, plastics, and fibers such as rayon or nylon. Coal is an important ingredient in production of products that require activated carbon, carbon fiber or silicon metal.

Coal is cheap and abundant, in 1st world countries, the population can afford other forms of energy. In 3rd world countries, the populations can not. Coal is going to be around for awhile, there is no getting around that. Coal can be shipped worldwide cheaply, natural gas, not so much...

The government should not pick winners and losers. Just assure that the playing field is level and let the market decide. The decision to stop using coal will come long before we run out of coal. But that decision needs to be market based.

It is a lot less relevant than in years past with renewables and natural gas and even clean coal.

As someone "in the business", the US is among the marquee leaders in filtering technology and responsible use for powergen/boilers and such.

I agree 10000000% we need to be conscious of our environment and the damage we all do to contribute to our carbon footprint but trying to 86 a whole industry based on unsubstantiated "evidence" is ludicrous.

And China leading the charge? W-T-F they are the biggest polluters to our globe

That being said, what is the argument for coal?
1) It is very easy to transport in large quantities via rail or ship without the risk of a hazardous spill or explosion.

2) It is the cheapest and most efficient fuel for electrical generation.

3) The U.S. has 25% of the world's proven deposits of coal which equates to more than a 200 year supply of coal for our electrical generation needs based on current usage. It definitely provides the U.S. with a competitive advantage for cheap power generation.
