Have you ever heard of this? I work with a lady who made the comment during last tax season that she had to find a kid to claim. Being that she has a son of her own, I had to ask her to explain. She said that she finds someone who doesn't file who has a kid and she claims their kid. She gives the parent of the kid a couple hundred bucks and keeps the rest of the refund herself. What made me ask this question is last week a 20 year old, unmarried kid that I work with said that he was looking for a kid to claim before he files this year.

I can't believe this sort of thing takes place and people get away with it.

oh yeh. this shite happens all the time and i don't think i can understate ALL THE TIME. the fema trailer parks just trade kids all around the park and i'm sure they didn't just start doing it then.

i just heard about it for the 1st time last year. like you, i was quite surprised. it also surprises me the IRS is not more on this, but i could be wrong. i really know nothing about the prevention side of it.

why not just lie and make up a kid? Actually "finding one" seems like wasted effort.

Happens all the time. And let me be the one to say it,since im already label as a racist on here. Its the minority's that are doing it. They know exactly how to work the system.

I retract that statement also. It happens in every race.No certain one.

you do realize you can get a reward for turning in people for tax fraud, right?

The two people I heard it from were of the same race, but I would have to agree that it happens in any race. I just can't see how if this is done by a lot of people, how the IRS can't seem to catch on. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to spot.

maybe because they have to go over ~100 million tax returns, and the kind of people that do this aren't necessarily the big fish when it comes to tax fraud.

Some get prosecuted, but very few. In fact, it seems like they target that type of thing once every 5 years or so - actually they target the low class tax preparers who broker these deals betwen the filers w/ no kids, and the non-filers with kids.

It's a big business in N.O. The local politicians actually like this boon-doggle. It puts a lot of money into the local economy. I heard awhile back that the Earned Income Child Credit is the single biggest economic stimulus to the New Orleans economy!

You need a SSN that won't be used by another filer.
