BEIJING (Reuters) - If North Korea launches an attack that threatens the United States then China should stay neutral, but if the United States attacks first and tries to overthrow North Korea's government China will stop them, a Chinese state-run newspaper said on Friday.

"China should...make clear that if North Korea launches missiles that threaten U.S. soil first and the U.S. retaliates, China will stay neutral,"

That's actually a pretty bold statement.

It also stated that if the U.S. strikes first that China should defend North Korea. Don't cherry pick.

This would be stupid on their part.

This has nothing to do with Trump. We're each other's #1 trading partner. No matter what we do with North Korea, I truly find it impossible they turn on us. They're too locked in as are we. I can't possibly think of a scenario where they will turn on us and vice versa. Russia sure, but China, no.

Edit: should have read that through. The Chinese paper is wrong and simply clinging to Maoism. What they're proposing is Nuclear Holocaust for Prince Piggy. Xi Jinping will never remotely consider an offensive in defending NK. I can't possibly imagine that he would doom his economy and likely the world all for Lord Too-Fat-To-Launch-A-Missile.

I hope we don't strike first. We are not the aggressor here.

It would be nice if a country other than us took the lead on getting this issue resolved

Outside neighboring skirmishes, no one ever goes to war but us.

To add to that, if one subscribes to a Marxist view of history (of which I am sure there remains an element in the PRC leadership), South Korea is a much, much more important economic partner than is North Korea. North Korea just has the tattered remnants of geopolitical usefulness to dangle in front of the PRC.

The trick is to ultimately convince Xi and his successors that they are as well of as a unified peninsula under a nominal South Korean command that is, in both name and in practice, as economically and politically tied to the PRC as it is to the US.

Want to know who Germany's #1 trading partner was in 1914?

Great Britain.

Why are we still talking about this manufactured side-show?

This is about as lame as ISIS.

Now, if they were talking about Germany threatening war...well then, we have some perspective.

America needs a constant boogeyman so sells stories to the public.

And like Norm McDonald said, America is writing the script - stay vigilent; stay sheep.

America runs soap opera games.

What about South Korea or Japan?

Well we're not in 1914 anymore. We're in 2017. Never have two economies been more intertwined in mutual destruction than the US and China. It has created the closest thing to world peace as far as I can conceive.

And as if to prove my point, look how that worked for the Germans. You don't think China isn't going to put that in mind, nevertheless the Nuclear Holocaust that would follow?

China (and the world at large) isn't going down due to Kim Fatty the Third.

Yeah, they're #3. North Korea isn't in their Top 30. They have vested interest to protect SK not NK, a remaint from the worst era in their country's history. No fricking way do they go to war for NK.

I'm not getting how that supports this:

Neutrality by China is fine, we don't need their help, we just don't need them interfering.
