I'm another who went to a private high school, but I spent an entire semester on world religions. Even though I don't believe in any of them, I can't think of information that would be more important to understanding the culture, mindset, and literature of the world. I would need a lot more information on this situation before coming to a determination.

This. I think it is particularly important to study Islam right now.

It is. But as long as they're studying the "history" of other religions as well. If the curriculum calls for the study of Islam but leaves out the study of Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, etc... then there's an issue.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

That's why the New Left Radicals like Islam -- both hate the USA and every founding principle it ever possessed.

there is a difference between studying for academic reasons and proselytizing/endorsing and apparently this Marine and the OP are fricking dumb.

I can't see how this is inappropriate in a world history class. I'd need more information, though. As usual, the article is woefully bereft of actual facts.

I realize you're confused. You come from a place of hate, us against them. You have no concept of "we're all in it together" and hate no one.

That's why your less intelligent but equally conservative friends here actually believe liberals "hate America". They are too limited to think past one level. You believe liberals are as myopic as you are because this is all you know. I understand that.

But the difference between me and you is, I may disagree with someone's actions, beliefs, lifestyle, but I'd don't hate him. When I go to the grocery store, I don't check to see if the person next to me is buying food with am EBT card. When I stop at the little country store on my way from my parents and see Latinos sitting on the bench outside taking a break from work, I don't curse them under my breath but tell them hi and think "good for them, they're making money," when I go to walmart I see a couple neither of which attracts me but I don't wonder what position in sex they take or if they can get married, when I see a religion comprised of about a quarter of the people on Earth get bastardized by extremists who slaughter in its name, I don't condemn the religion or those believers who are nit guilty.

The difference is you're a hater, and I'm not.

Glad I could help you today.

You call us unintelligent haters. You have been proven wrong on many occasions.

Your own psychological problems and personality disorders prevent you from being a rational person.

I submit that YOU are the hater, and you hate with a vengeance all that you view as the oppressor of your alternative lifestyle. That's why you hate us and love Obama. That is why you embrace that which attacks what you hate.

You have the problem, Sir, not constitutional conservative thinkers -- YOU.

I am not confused. I have you pegged to a "T".

PS Obama himself promised that he would "fundamentally transform" the USA. Now, he may not hate the USA, but, in order for him to believe that it needs to be "fundamentally transformed", he and his New Left Radical friends must see lots that's wrong with the USA. It's maybe not "hate" but it sure ain't love.

Most necessary subject matter for a public school teacher to have students spend time writing a 3-page paper on? Debatable.

There's the rub! A 3 page paper is extensive. That's why we should be suspicious.

Are the students also writing a 3 page paper on Judaism? Catholicism? If so, that's excessive class time devoted to religion. If not, it's showing bias in favor of Islam. Both are wrong.

I agree. However, we don't have all of the facts. It appears that the school might be directing the study more intently on Islam than on, say, Judaism.

A 3 page paper is excessive for one religion. BUT, what if the 3 page paper is supposed to cover Islam, Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism? Then, I say, NOT excessive.

We need more facts, but, I do understand the concern.

Gotta agree

How can you study Human History without study religion? Regardless how one feels about what took place throughout history. The putting your head in the sand approach with this is just plain silly. Plus, Seems some make learning a personal decisions to what someone should or not learn. I'm finding examples of this now and in history. No matter what happened throughout human history, teach it no mater where that road goes down or who's feeling might get hurt. Sure seems most have band-aids and blood on their hands at some point in history. So let the skeletons fall to the floor when we open those closest doors. Then let the person/student learning about it have a critical thinking moment of their own.

The concern is whether the public schools are taking an approach that teaches World Religions objectively or whether the curriculum is showing bias in favor of one of the world's religions for reasons of political correctness.

The former is fine, the latter is bad.

Champagne, I believe that was a back handed compliment. What you fail to understand is we truly love this country warts and all. What you see as revisionists history, I see free people searching for the truth and an understanding of history that is not some communists/fascist sanitized propaganda. Real patriotism is not flying a ginormous American flag from your front porch. I believe it is gaining a real understanding of how exceptional this country and it's citizens have been. You can't talk about the Marshall plan and not talk about the Trail of Tears.

Yep, and by the dad's outrage, it would lead one to believe that is the case. Obviously we don't know the facts surrounding this, but at face value that would be the inclination off of info provided

Please don't waste your time or derail the thread responding to a trolling post that does not address the thread topic and only contains childish name calling and put downs.

As far as the OP, I'm okay with teaching about all of the major religions but it raises lots of questions - Who decides which religions are taught? When does the teaching cross the line to advocacy? Etc. Has the ACLU weighed in yet?

In high school, we learned about several religions and had representatives come in and discuss the religion with us. I was struck by how angry the Islamic presenters were.

Let me explain this to you, ma'm.

The muslims hate you. They will violently rape/sodomize you then kill you. They dont like you. let me repeat that again, THEY frickING HATE YOU TO THE POINT OF WANTING TO KILL YOU.

The fact you gays seem to think that suddenly the muslims will be all koombaya with your lifestyle after you accept theirs is as hilarious as it is pathetically inaccurate.

In my 11th grade history class we had a 3 page paper due each week on a different topic.

Also, how can you say a 3 page paper on one religion is excessive when you're covering 1300 years of a movement that now includes over 1 billion people? If anything, 3 pages is severely short changing the subject.

I think it's time to go clean the ashtrays
