re: Can you imagine yourself ever being a refugee?

Mrs Pimp's parents escaped "the homeland" a week after several family members were taken away to prison and their business/property seized by the Communists. They made it out in the middle of the night, the family separated, and got on a tiny boat and made it to a refugee camp in Malaysia where they lived in a tent, happy to be alive.
Grandpa Pimp fled Poland one step ahead of annihilation. Those who stayed behind were murdered. His entire family, down the the last child, over two days in 1943.
In both cases, leaving while you can,and having a prosperous legacy and family in the greatest country in the world-the good old USA-beat the hell out of you and your whole family being summarily executed and dumped in a mass grave. I salute those who had the wisdom and unbelievable GRIT (thinking of my bad-arse Father In Law and the horror he endured to ensure the survival of his family) to get out before it was too late.

Go to the border and survive to come back.I completely understand a move like that.
Like somebody else said, women and children only.

I think of this often. Originally I was wondering why these young men didn't have the will to fight for the future of their country?
Then I tried to imagine having to fight for what little I had against the likes of Russia and the U.S.A bombing the shite out of my friends. Realizing how much we meddle in their part of the world changed my thoughts. We shouldn't be playing God in these ME nations. Especially over a god damned pipeline.
There's some fricked up people in charge of this world. What a shame.
All the more reason to fight.

Who would tell you that you can't?
I was speaking more about the Islamic states war against the west, not as much the civil war in their homeland.
Really their entire civil war is between regimes backed by current world powers, so even "if" they win they aren't really free.

I was living in New Orleans in August 2005......so yeah.
I was living in Mobile, working at Bender Shipyard.
I ran up to my Mom's house to sit the storm out( I had an offer to babysit the Chemul oil rig,the one that slammed the Africatown Bridge),as soon as it was over, things were in recovery mode, and I made a lot of money, dealing with some very nasty shite.
Then I moved over to New Orleans, worked at the Northrup/Gruman Yard, replacing workers that didn't want to return. U.S.S. New York, and that tribe of boats.
I slept on a Navy Barge 4 nights a week,70 bucks per week, then if I wanted,go home for the weekend, I just did it.
It was perplexing to me,why the locals wouldn't just come back, they were throwing money at me.

I'm wondering why they go to Europe instead of the many surrounding Muslim countries where there is less of a culture barrier.
Posted on 1/15/17 at 6:47 pm to DrunkerThanThou
those countries won't take them
a better question is asking why the rich, Arab countries in the ME refuse to take them
but to be fair, lots of muslim countries have taken them in Turkey has taken in millions
it's those Arab states in the Gulf that absolutely refuse

Why don't the patriots return and fix their own homeland? Are we too good here?
Maybe if we really wanted to change the world,we would give refuge only long enough for survival, then you have a responsibility.

You are all over the place bro. You need to institute some thread discipline if we are discussing Syrian refugees. I said months ago that they should be given safe passage to refugee camps in the Middle East until which time they can be repatriated. Because I sure don't think they belong in The West or will make The West better.
But why your/my great-great grandpa left Ireland (or whaerever)to seek refuge in America during the potato famine is a separate topic. I mean Ireland was surely "worth fighting for" but at some point you make a calculation that dealing with the English and starvation doesn't seem like the best long-term plan.

That's what I mean. Go to the border, and wait, you might even be able to do good things there.
The truth is,there are a shitload of people that want to receive more than they are willing to give.
I made substantial money,to get my life on the right path, after tons of failures,by dealing with things that the locals wouldn't come back and do.Then bought a place within sight of My greatx4 Grandaddy's grave.

Is everybody a bandwagon/T-shirt citizen?
Why do you assume everyone has to have the same level of national patriotism as you? You obviously don't know much about the Middle East. If you are a Kurd living in Aleppo, why do you care what happens to the nation of Syria?

The wife and I got flooded out in August, been living with her parents ever since, just moved back into our home (made an efficiency apartment out of the dinette area until the rest of the floors are done).
If the house were to flood every other day, you're damned straight we would leave. We wouldn't go all the way to Germany, but at least to some place that didn't flood.

Would you not fight for your homeland? Do you just leave it and go some other place? I could imagine myself making border deals maybe, planning for something else.Just leave the place where your ancestors lived and died, trying to make a better world for me?Not a chance. Probably been asked a thousand times, because the question is so obvious. How could you trust a person that would do that?
I guess Obama feels guilty for prolonging the Syrian civil war and he feels somewhat responsible for all of those innocent civilians getting killed who would be alive if he stopped arming the rebels to keep the war going.
Who am I kidding? Obama doesn't give a shite about brown people. He just wants to import as many poor, illiterate and sick people to the USA because he knows they will vote Democrat.

Exactly, how will any of these countries get better when the people who oppose what is going on just get to leave and lead a relatively comfortable life at our tax payers expense.

Damned straight I do. If it's being bombed to frick and back by two different sides I want nothing to do with, then after a while I move far enough away that I am out of the theater of operations.
If I agree with one of the sides fighting though, I stay my arse there and try to kill enough of the enemy to make them take their battle elsewhere.
