"Purportedly" is a synonym of "alleged" and "rumor."
If I knew for a fact that these were his tweets, I would send an email to the department. I just can't do that with it under the status of "purportedly." Is there anyway to verify for sure that these are his tweets?

How could a history professor be so staggeringly stupid. I'd expect this from a genders studies, or sociology, or fine arts professor. I'd expect a historian to know enough history to realize how foolish it is to compare Trump to the fascists.

You don't know current-day Academia. It's sickening the way discourses about substantive issues are being done. I see it every day where I work, and it is simply the case that the Liberal Arts uni-party is more unhinged than it ever has been.
Fortunately, slowly but surely the proletariat is growing wise to the racket that "higher education" has become. Look for a big change in the Humanities and Social Sciences in the next few years after the bottom falls out with student loans.
