Are you implying that some people should be able to buy a car based on 1970's pricing because that is when they bought their last car?

Not at all I'm explaining that it was a non free market system tool and nothing else. I went on to explain luxury buildings in NYC are being built because of demand. A free market enterprise in response to a post saying there was not a free market. It would be nice to buy and rent at those numbers of old, but the reality is if someone is paying 1970s prices for rent the owner is losing his 21st century arse because of it.

Geechee Tax Controversy

Wrong name, but the issue is still real.

you mischaracterized that scenario entirely. the government didn't raise taxes on people. the rates are the same

what did they do? accurately value the properties

quote:

County Attorney Adam Poppell told CNN that the Gullah-Geechee culture is invaluable, but the properties had been historically undervalued due to errors in previous property appraisals.

"We have to follow the law, and assess at fair market value," he told CNN.

what is being said in response? MOAR GOVERNMENT AID!
quote:

To fix the problem, he said, "the state has to create a special exemption for cultural communities."

quote:

"The solution is that we freeze the tax assessments, we get the services to this island, so the people can live here," he said. "Families can move back in, have children here, have jobs on the mainland, or even develop their own economy here on the island."

and what will happen? prices will raise even more, leading to more bitching and claims of discrimination

oh, and who cause the increase in price and governmental awareness of this increase? the residents themselves

quote:

Tax Assessors Board Chairman James Larkin suggests the Sapelo residents brought this issue on themselves, as some began to sell their property to developers and non-islanders who built bigger, upscale vacation homes, causing valuations to increase, and along with them their property taxes.

the residents even admit they are sitting on gold mines

quote:

The assessed "fair market value" of their property went from $176,075 in 2011 to $910,333 in 2012. That brought on increase of more than 500% in property taxes. He is refusing to pay the taxes and he refuses to sell his family land, which he says is worth over $3 million.

and this lady is straight up fricking retarded

quote:

Cornelia Bailey said her land may be worth about $384,000, but in reality it is priceless.

"I told one guy it was priceless, and he said everything has a price, and I said, you don't know me, this is priceless. You don't have enough money to buy it, so forget it," she said.

property tax needs to be reined in. Just another tool of the establishment to get what it wants.

sure

but the example you posted was not an example of the state doing anything except what it's supposed to do

the property taxes did not change (as you stated on the first page). the state just accurately assessed property values

these people are not poor. they are sitting on 6-7 figure pieces of land. they just want everyone else to be taxed and to not be taxed on their properties. they want their cake and to eat it, too.

Where do you get they want everyone else to be taxed but not them. At least you didn't mention EBT and Section 8.

RollTide4Ever did not mischaracterize the situation:

quote:

This small, simple community is finding itself embroiled in a feud with local officials over a sudden, huge increase in property assessments that are raising property taxes as much as 600% for some.

quote:

what is being said in response? MOAR GOVERNMENT AID!

An exemption for a community of less than 50 slave descendants (the Saltwater Geechee people have been on the island for 200+ years) that live without a number of government services = that ALL CAPS BULLSHITE?

quote:

The bumpy, unpaved dirt roads are a constant reminder that this is an island with few services. There are no police officers, fire rescue personnel, doctors or hospitals. There is no school or post office. People drive their garbage to a single garbage compactor. There are no grocery stores. The gas station is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I don't think so.

quote:

oh, and who cause the increase in price and governmental awareness of this increase? the residents themselves

Valid.

quote:

and this lady is straight up fricking retarded

No. She is the griot of the island, so it's expected that she would value her culture/ancestral roots over the potential financial gain. She is also the great aunt of Kansas City Chiefs DL Allen Bailey. I remember her from a piece that OTL (ESPN) did on Bailey and Sapelo Island last year.

quote:

if only life (and the government they look to for everything) was this easy

It seems to me that they aren't looking to the government for much of anything, except for a tax exemption. And considering all the circumstances, I don't think that's unreasonable, but I do think your snide remarks were.

if they're not happy with government services, they can make millions by selling and then move to a place with services they prefer. this has nothing to do with accurately evaluating their property values. granting them exception is asking for government aid. plain and simple

quote:

No. She is the griot of the island, so it's expected that she would value her culture/ancestral roots over the potential financial gain.

i didn't say she was retarded for not selling. she's retarded for claiming property has no value while in the midst of a discussion on property taxes, which require valuations. if everyone got to avoid paying property taxes by saying their property was invaluable, then the system would collapse

just that

the comments are more snide towards mr. RollTide4Ever than the tax dodgers in the story

he painted a picture of an evil government motive to displace minorities by changing the tax structure to force them out. not only is that completely not true, but asking for a government exception in light of this argument is absurd and unreasonable

Okay, you fricking retard (You continue to refer to Cornelia Bailey as retarded, but I think the label is more applicable to you.)

quote:

the state didn't "jack up" anything.

"Jack up" is a slang term that commonly means to increase the price of something. If I go to the store, and the price has been raised on X. Then I tell someone, "They jacked up the price on X," it's obvious what I mean, to anyone that's not a fricking retard.

That's all RollTide4Ever said with regard to this situation with the Saltwater Geechees. It looked like maybe he wrote it in a rush. I don't know if he meant to imply something else. But based on what he said about Sapelo Island, he didn't mischaracterize, which is something I have seen you do quite often on this board, retard. One example:

Progressive Hypocrisy: Food Deserts v. "Mom and Pop" Stores

quote:

so i was watching some Melissa Harris-Perry @ Essence Fest this morning and she had a panel of black women basically talking about how America hates black people (in various ways). one discussion was about "food deserts" in black areas, where multiple commentators criticized "mom and pop" stores and the food they offer blacks

That was a mischaracterization, and I linked the video on page 4.

quote:

if they're not happy with government services, they can make millions by selling and then move to a place with services they prefer. this has nothing to do with accurately evaluating their property values. granting them exception is asking for government aid. plain and simple

It's not just that they're not happy with the services on the island. They live WITHOUT many services that most people in the rest of the country have! That is a key factor in this situation. The other -- Why are they on the island to begin with? Because their ancestors were ripped from their homeland and forced into bondage on the island. That is the other key factor.

Those 2 factors are why I say that some form of tax exemption/deduction is not unreasonable. That's just my initial reaction from the little information I have on this. If I were really going to make a decision regarding their property taxes, I'd have to investigate all the circumstances deeper. Whether or not they are already receiving reparations would be a critical factor.

quote:

i didn't say she was retarded for not selling. she's retarded for claiming property has no value while in the midst of a discussion on property taxes, which require valuations. if everyone got to avoid paying property taxes by saying their property was invaluable, then the system would collapse

Alright, back to this retard bullshite. Here's the thing -- her comment WAS about selling:

quote:

"I told one guy it was priceless, and he said everything has a price, and I said, you don't know me, this is priceless. You don't have enough money to buy it, so forget it," she said.

She wasn't talking about what the tax rates should be, retard.

quote:

oh

just that

Oh, you're so good at the squirrelly sarcastic routine, retard.

Yeah, just that. They're more deserving of an exemption/deduction than the churches all throughout this country that don't pay property taxes.

quote:

the comments are more snide towards mr. RollTide4Ever than the tax dodgers in the story

Well, it was Cornelia Bailey that you called retarded twice, retard. Not RollTide4Ever.
