Well this is interesting...

LINK

quote:

Texas' top three political leaders — Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dennis Bonnen — threw their support Wednesday behind a proposal to increase the sales tax by one percentage point in order to lower property taxes across the state.

So essentially, they want MORE state control of school funding. By increasing the sales tax by a full point - it would provide money that the state can send to the ISDs. Then, the ISDs could reduce their property taxes and still stay revenue-neutral.

A lot of us have long advocated that we need to fund our schools more like Texas does - less state control/funding and take the handcuffs off of the school district ability to use property taxes as they see fit. These three "GOP" leaders want to basically move closer to what LA does.

This is certainly interesting.

Yeah, but it's already being spent how the locals want it by the locals in charge. I can't see how centralizing the funding will end in anything but a redistribution.

How are the Texas ISD's still broke year after year? We have one of the most successful lottery programs in the country of which 30-40% goes back to the schools, yet they are still broke AF.

Not to mention we have substandard rankings :double casty:

Texas has a reputation of actually spending tax money on things that they said they will spend it for.

Louisiana government has no such trust placed in them, at least by people who are actually paying attention.

I'm not fond of the deal either.

Even though Texas can force a school district to close (and it has in several cases where mismanagement was involved), this may push consolidation where it isn't needed, by forcing a district to consolidate or lose funding.

Meh. This doesn’t have anything to with Louisiana. Louisiana’s school systems would be garbage regardless of how they are funded under the current political class in this state.

Texas is still the shining city on the hill when it comes to comparisons to Louisiana on public education. Shifting the tax burden around slightly won’t change that.

It is an effort to get more funding to property-poor ISDs.

It isn't cheap to build football palaces (Allen, McKinney). Then have to turn around and rebuild them when the first build turned out to be shoddy.

So from the perspective of home owners, which I am not, this is a nice gesture. For those of us that choose to rent specifically to dodge property taxes, this blows. My guess would be that they understand the potential to raise more revenue because the pool of renters is larger in the big cities versus home owners.

If I owned property in Texas, I wouldnt have a problem with this. Collect a little extra tax revenue from out of state visitors and non-property owners in exchange for lower property tax

Be thankful that Maw Richards isn't around. She'd take your 13K and send it to the ghetto schools to make things fair.

The cult like behavior around and towards high school football always struck me as one of the weirdest things about Texas and it can get creepy sometimes.

I have no idea how good my alma mater high school football team is right now and I don't care enough to find out and I still live close by in the same area. Haven't gone to one single game since I graduated.

Your landlord is factoring in the cost of his property taxes into the amount he charges for rent
