1992

quote:

Now that the period of global confrontation is behind us, I call upon you to take a fresh look of [sic] the current policy of the United States towards Russia and also to take a fresh look at the longer term prospects of our relations. Russia is a different country today. Sometimes the obsolete standards brought into being by a different era are artificially imposed on new realities. True, that equally applies to us. Let us together, therefore, master the art of reconciliating differences on the basis of partnership which is the most efficient and democratic way. This would come naturally both for the Russians and the Americans. If this is done, many of the problems which are now impeding mutual, advantageous cooperation between Russia and the United States would become irrelevant, and I mean legislative frameworks too. It will not be a wasteful endeavor. On the contrary, it will promote a more efficient solution of your problems as well as of ours. And, of course, it will create new jobs in Russia as well as in the United States. History is giving us a chance to fulfill President Wilson's dream, mainly to make the world safe for democracy.

More than 30 years ago President Kennedy addressed these words to humanity: "My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America can do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." I believe that his inspired call for working together towards a democratic world is addressed above all to our two peoplesto the people of America and to the people of Russia. Partnership and friendship of our two largest democracies is strengthening democracy, is indeed a great goal.

Joining the world community, we wish to preserve our identity, our own image and history, promote culture and strengthen moral standards of our people. We find relevant the warning of the great Russian philosopher [unintelligible] who said, "To negate Russia in the name of humankind is to rob the humankind." At the same time, Russia does not aspire to change the world in its own image. It is the fundamental principal of the new Russia to be generous and to share experience, moral values and emotional warmth rather than to impose and curse. It is the tradition of the Russian people to repay kindness with kindness. This is the bedrock of the Russian lifestyle, the underlying truth revealed by the great Russian culture. Free and democratic Russia will remain committed to this tenet. Today, free and democratic Russia is extending its hand of friendship to the people of America. Acting on the will of the people of Russia, I am inviting you, and through you the people of the United States, to join us in partnership, in the quest for freedom and justice in the 21st century.

We had a great opportunity to change the world by befriending Russia.

Instead, we kept them as enemies and sold out to China.

We became pretty friendly with Gorbachev's and Yeltsins Russia, to be fair. Both were very much reformists.

Putin hated Gorbachev and soured on Yeltsin, but I don't think it was until Chechen wars that the tide turned back.

it's crazy 30 years ago...

Russian President speaks to congress...speaking about new beginnings

and today we have two woman, despised by many Americans, holding up a Flag of a Corrupt Ukraine and kissing Zelensky on the cheek like some hero.

while Pelosi a few years earlier tore up Trump's State of the Union speech..

It's really symbolic of the times we're living...

we've been compromised from within

Russia is much more a natural ally than China.

And now we've pushed them into an alliance with China and others, at our expense.

The Biden Administration is the worst in our nation's history.

Yeltsin was offering the branch of peace. We missed an opportunity to forge an alliance with our old enemy that could have led to a golden age of peace. However, the MIC can't make their unholy billions off of peace.
These bastards have led us right back to where we were ; to another Cold War... that's heating up. Frustrating and sad to realize America isn't the shining light on a hill.

1. Equating Putin’s Russia to Yeltsin’s Russia is disingenuous.

2. We did not treat 1990s Russia as an “enemy.” We made the mistake of treating them like a third-world backwater, which hurt their pride … and GAVE us Putin.

3. If we had treated them as a respected international partner, Putin would never have risen to power. WE put Russia back into the “enemy” column when WE created Putin.

4. Yeltsin’s Russia could have been a valuable friend and ally. Putin’s Russia cannot ever be anything but a rival.

Gorby, yes

Yeltsin, no. He was the transitional figure. Initially rose to power as a Soviet, but held the stage as a post-Soviet.

and you say this because?

we have literally not held the 1992 treated maintaining a barrier states...from Nato nations

Putin has spoken about this issue numerous times

Ukraine was a red line...

no one respected him enough to listen

and now we're in a cluster frick we have no business being in, but the United States created much of it...

so now we're funding a war we're not in

only globalist fricktards in the GOP would allow this

Iirc Putin didn't really "rise" to power, the way most would think. Yeltsin hand picked Putin, who was a pretty low level govt guy, to replace him.

as usual you're a terrible historian

Gorbechev was the president of the entire Soviet Union, Yeltsin was the president of Russia

James Baker promised them both we would not expand NATO one inch toward the east, and then Clinton made us out to be liars when he began expanding NATO in 1996 - every US president since then has made it all steadily worse, by design

we've been provoking Russia for 26 years

The position "President of Russia" did not even exist until the USSR was already in its death throes.

Yes, as I said, Yeltsin rose within the Soviet system, but he repudiated that system almost immediately after becoming President of the Russian Federation and made a VERY public resignation from the Communist Party. His most-consequential actions on the world stage occurred after that resignation.

I am quite comfortable with my understanding of world history, but YOU might profit by asking yourself why you are unable to engage in a discussion without the personal insults and attacks.

Just a thought.
