The United States is about to receive its first domestically produced biometric “smart gun.”
These weapons unlock like a smartphone with the owner’s fingerprints or other biometric data.
Biometric Update reports that Colorado-based startup Biofire says it will begin shipping its fingerprint and facial recognition-equipped handguns by the end of March.
Biometric Update goes on to report:
“But the smart weapon maker will still face resistance among gun rights advocates who claim the technology is unreliable and that smart guns are a backdoor to controlling firearm ownership in the U.S.”
The outlet reports that the Biofire Smart Gun, a 9mm handgun pictured below, was designed to prevent unauthorized use by validating user identity, reducing accidental shootings by children, teen suicides, theft and criminal use.
It’s surprising to me how even some pro-gun websites and publications are promoting smart guns as a positive development that will aid in gun safety. Yeah, but at what price?
Americans have already been blindly led into the surveillance state through their high-tech vehicles, baby monitors, smart TVs, smart meters, smart appliances, and a host of other convenience-based products. Firearms are one of the last remaining non-digital items in modern society. Let’s keep it that way.

Increased costs great. Maybe all those great little scholars growing up in the inner cities will agree to put aside their differences, get jobs to afford them and maybe even afford a driver license to use to vote with too. Boy these democrats leadership’s are always ahead of their constituents

I’ll pass on this technology, I think these are for the few Vaxxers that are on the fence about getting some protection. But not for me!

I have no issues with them making biometric guns, several people already have biometric safes to store the guns they have. It can provide an extra level of safety to someone worried about having a gun in the home, and there are plenty of those people. Two things though -
1. This is just an option and not a future requirement of all guns.
2. There should be an override option to disable the biometric component. Every biometric device has a secondary unlock mechanism and guns should not be different.

I think this is a good idea for those parents who have kids. I know as far as being a parent keep the gun locked up. But mistakes are made or feeling like “my kid knows not to play/touch the gun” mentality, but things happen and kids being kids lives are lost to protocols not being followed.
With this technology it can save a young child’s life in these type situations.

Anyone who purchases one of these is asking for all kinds of trouble.
What happens when a purchaser grabs his smart gun to address an intruder but it does not instantly recognize him (sort if like biometrics and facial recognition on phones doesn't always work the first time).
Also, is this wholly self contained? If this is somehow tied to the internet, could the FBI disable your guns before they decide to visit you abiut a Facebook post? Can it be hacked? What happens to your firearm of there's an EMP?

I can understand parents having them on some guns, not sure I would want it on a self defense firearm.
