British baby Charlie Gard, who was at the center of a legal battle that captured the world's attention, died Friday, one week before his first birthday, according to a family spokesperson.

Charlie was born on August 4, 2016, seemingly healthy. But two months into his short life his parents noticed his health was declining. They took him to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in October where he remained at least until Thursday.

He was diagnosed with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, a rare inherited condition that causes muscle weakness and loss of motor skills.
.....

The end
On Monday, Charlie's parents gave up their fight to take Charlie to the US after new brain and muscle scans revealed their son had deteriorated and was therefore less likely to benefit from the experimental treatment, while his doctors and parents battled in court. Too much time had passed.
.....

"Mummy and Daddy love you so much Charlie, we always have and we always will and we are so sorry that we couldn't save you. We had the chance but we weren't allowed to give you that chance. Sweet dreams baby. Sleep tight our beautiful little boy," Charlie's parents said in a statement after they gave up their fight. They called Charlie their hero.

The usual suspects will be here shortly saying it was the best decision, the parents were delusional, the baby had no chance, blah blah blah.

But the fact of the matter is, we just saw a judge decide on whether parents could try to save their child. That in and of itself is scary.

lol

You already hear stories like this one...thanks to corporate insurance...but by all means keep complaining that the insurance industry has "your" best interests at heart.

Death panel. Sorry folks, we got gender reassignment surgeries to fund and don't need any more toxic white babies oppressing the place.

It was posted in the OT thread that the government wouldn't even let the parents take him home to pass away. Great idea dems! Let's bring it here!

If it were my kid dying, I'd move heaven and earth to get them the treatment they needed, even if there was only a slim chance of success. It shouldn't be up to the government to determine your options for treatment, especially when other people, organizations, or countries are offering help.

The best doctors in the world could do nothing for him. You'd rather he continue living on life support?

Sad.

Some LIB jackass on a call in radio show this morning said really sarcastically, "of course with a private, market driven healthcare system no one ever gets taken off of life support. Somehow the market just drives down the cost so that people can stay on life support for as long as needed. Saying how with the market many people would never even get to life support in the first place..." Almost offed myself.

Needless to say I hit the accelerator in an effort to get within distance of a better station. Finally found me some Hugh Hewitt.

I believe there was a time when the experimental treatment legitimately could have worked, but that time was wasted fighting through the courts.

Those would be in the US . . . where he was forbidden to travel.

This is true. The kid is better off now.

This is also true. The government should not have decided this for the parents. If they wanted to keep wasting there money on silly treatments that will not work and go bankrupt it is there prerogative not the government's to decide who should live and die.
