How the hell is Bates NOT a deserter and Bergdhal IS? They both left base in a combat zone without permission. Only difference is one of them murdered like 16 civilians - so I guess its not desertion in that case.

If he didn't go on a rampage he probably would have been charged with desertion.

Notice it's all about Barry, similar to a Barry speech. He isn't worth the keystrokes guys, he's obtuse for the thrill of it.

Still got a year. Just missed the timing to test this year. By like 2 weeks based on date of rank

Oh well. More studying time right?

You in the air force too? I just switched over. How exactly do promotions work in the AF?

Welcome to the blue

Depends on if you're enlisted or officer (like my wife ).

Junior enlisted get promoted through time in grade primarily. After that, you have to test to earn additional stripes for NCO/SNCO ranks.

Sounds like an excuse for his pre-meditated, ruthless, and cold blooded actions.

Did you suggest the death penalty?

Did you suggest that he betrayed his country?

I mean - not for the murdering of 16 civilians - just for the desertion?

Has he even been charged with the desertion? Maybe its not too late.

I'm pro death penalty, especially when it comes to killing kids, so I'm sure I did. And he didn't betray his country. He lost his damn mind and went on a murderous rampage.

Bates didn't desert from my understanding. Desertion means you don't intend to come back. And no one is asking to withhold a trial or an investigation but what leads you to believe bergdahl intended to return? Assume he lies to investigators, what evidence would satisfy your reasonable doubt of his innocence to the charge of desertion?

NOTE---------
Sorry - I think I may have been saying BaTes in some cases - its BaLes, mea culpa.

His time AWOL only counts from the time he left base until his capture. Since that's less than 30 days, the burden of proof is actually on the military to show he did not intend to return. That's what I read on the internets at least, do you know different? In theory he could remain silent if the military has no evidence of his intent to not return.

So if it's proven he was seeking out the Taliban would that be enough for you?

What evidence can the military present that would cause you to doubt his innocence?

The 30 day thing doesn't apply in a combat zone. I don't why that keeps getting brought up.

Right but your hate for Berghdahl, and the deeply vicious nature of your insults for him and his future, are quite obvious. This guy, not so much. You should be outraged that a guy goes on a murdering rampage and only gets life in prison, and is just labeled a psycho. Berghdahl walks off base, gets picked up by the Taliban, and is a traitorous, POS, motherfricker that should be hanged and burned. Oh, and his family gets death threats.

I don't like any of you military types as it is. I have zero respect for your views of accountability, and none of you are role models for anyone. The majority of you just subject yourselves to some brainwashing, a money grab, and are allowed free-reign of very loose morals. If Berghdahl realized that, and was persecuted/ridiculed by his platoon for it, then he is all the better for it.

Let's ask a more succinct question: since most soldiers have the legal right to kill/defend themselves in the theater of war, which death troubles you more, those of defenseless children, or those of trained soldiers who sign up for it?

The death of children will always bother me more. More than you will ever know. I've seen innocent children gunned down. It will hunt me for the rest of my life. And I wouldn't have shed a tear if Bales were executed. But he didn't betray his brothers. Bergdahl did. I don't want to sound cliché, but he broke the code. frick him. It would have more than fine with me if both were executed.
