Truth be told, he's completely right.

Now, I by no means agree with Liberal economic policy, but I can assure you that I'd be more open to their positions if my way of life wasn't constantly vilified.

Liberals don't debate, they insult. They can't come come up with support for their position so they simply attack yours for being routed in some type of "ism". The immediate reaction to that by any normal person is throw your hands up in exhaustion and just say "frick it, you're too stupid to debate".
