I listened to Charles Krauthammer recently wherein he quoted a very moving dedication to Confederate Civil War veterans buried at Arlington National Cemetery. What went unsaid was that this hallowed ground that our nation honors belonged to Robert E. Lee and his wife, a descendant of George Washington. What is to be done?

I was being facetiously cryptic. The phrase "What is to Be Done?" is V. I. Lenin's pamphlet which called for revolution pre-WWI.

Why dig'em up, of course!

[And let's not forget the sacred Muslim burial given to Osama Bin Laden by the US Navy.]

According to bitchATL, Arlington National Cemetery was made because the union hated lee and turning it into a national monument is far worse than had they burnt it to the ground and salted the land.

The history of the cemetery is really fascinating. After the federal government took the land for burial purposes in 1864, Lee's grandson sued the United States in the 1880s claiming the "taking" was illegal and the case went to the Supreme Court. Lee won and the land was transferred back to the family. Lee's grandson turned around and sold it back to the United States for a relatively minor sum and at the rededication ceremony the transaction was overseen by Robert Todd Lincoln, the then Secretary of War.

Laugh.

The officer most responsible for planting dead soldiers in Lee's front yard was Montgomery Meigs, a Georgian who remained loyal to the old flag.

Meigs strongly opposed secession and remained loyal to the Union; his record as Quartermaster General was regarded as outstanding, both in effectiveness and in ethical probity, and Secretary of State William H. Seward viewed it as a key factor in Union victory.

How much more worthy of admiration is General Meigs than traitor Lee?

Lee and other Confederates were traitors to the USA? So what? Secession was a big "frick You" to the USA. Why would any Confederate care about what somebody in the USA thought?

I can't imagine how any good ole Rebel would EVER give a damn about the USA or what anybody in the USA thought about anything. I think that had I been a Confederate, I would have no love at all for the USA after the war and I certainly would not give a damn about what some Northerner thought about me.

Do you really think that calling Confederates "traitors" means anything at all? They were trying to kill every Federal soldier they could. I really don't think they were worried about those Federal blue bellies calling them mean names.

I'll bet some of those ole Rebels would be PROUD to be called a Traitor to the USA. I don't think their feelings would be hurt at all.

That's just my 2 cents. Personally, it wouldn't have bothered me at all to be called a traitor to the USA after I had just spent a few years trying to make my way to Wash DC so I could burn the whole damn place down.
