Are we really talking about a modern European country breaking apart in Civil War?

This isn't the fractuous Balkans, if it can happen in Spain in the 21st Century it can happen literally anywhere.

Change comes, eventually.

Sometimes there are irreconcilable differences.

Spain has long harbored a number of separatist states - just look at the Basques.

And let us not forget the Nationalists and Communists in the dress rehearsal prior to WWII - not all that long ago.

The Catalans traditionally enjoyed a great degree of autonomy prior to Franco’s crackdown. They’ve generally regained more and more since the democratic restoration with a couple of notable instances of moves for more autonomy being legally reined in. This didn’t come out of nowhere. Highly doubtful they’ll achieve true independence this go-round. They may win some concessions from Madrid, though.

Someone fill me in on Spanish socio-economics. Are the Catalonians the ones that are sick of the pro EU crap and are doing something about it?

Because if there is anything this board likes to talk about, it's a potential Civil War.

And congrats on spurring a couple of inevitable U.S. Civil War threads.

The EU loves these "independence" movements. I use independence in quotations because any group of people, and I am talking specifically about the Catalans and the Scots, willing to immediately cede their sovereignty to the European Union are not actually interested in self-determination.

Catalonia is a wealthy region of Spain, a country which has had serious economic issues the past decade or more. That is part of the issue, but the Catalans have a separate identity and a separate language. Not to mention during the reign of Francisco Franco the regional Basque and Catalan identities were brutally suppressed by the Madrid government.

The U.N. Charter specifically calls for support of democracy and self-determination.

And yet you see every member nation shitting on those principles while turning a blind eye.

Further proof that the U.N. is hot garbage.

I don’t pretend to truly understand it as a Catalan or Spaniard would . But as someone who loves Barcelona I would remind them that life is good and that that can change very quickly .

not a chance

they are just a region that doesn't see its self as being Spanish. Culture, language etc are different and they are very well off.

It would be similar to Bavaria separating from Germany.

If they took Baden-Württemberg with them I'd be ok with this actually.
