The ISS will be broadcasting in 4k today in a link to the National Association of Broadcasters Expo in Vegas. Will be the first time (publicly) they have been in 4k. Up till now, only 720p with an occasional 1080p (bandwidth issues).
Little discussed, but a big problem for Mars exploration. The cameras on the ISS have to be periodically replaced by sending up new cameras. The problem? The gamma radiation in space destroys (over time) the CMOS sensor in the camera, which is what receives the light photons creating images.
There's no supply ship for a Mars expedition. Once the cameras go on that trip, they start degrading. Eventually, they will all fail. No video images from the Mars team after a few years. Scientists haven't figured out yet how to prevent this. It's a big problem for the Mars program. Hopefully, some technical team will work it out.
