I went to high school with Anthony Jeselnik. He was a sick and depraved back then as he is now. I liked him. And yes, his bit couldn't more true right now. everyone trying to get their piece of a tragedy.

The term " thoughts and prayers " can be nothing more than cheap virtue- signaling. Or it can be the way that you express that you are noting the importance of an event, and are pausing for a moment to contemplate the importance of what you are seeing. As we are social animals we have a need to connect with others and let them know we sincerely feel that connection, particularly when we are seeing human tragedy. So depending on the person it can be a cheap cliche offered as " proof" that you are a good person, or a humble display of human compassion.
And as a person who has been in the receiving end of compassion, I can say that these little cultural cliches can be very meaningful to anybody who is truly suffering . It may not seem like much, but it's essentially all we have as humans; love and compassion for those who suffer.
