and what conditions would make it acceptable to you?

I would accept amnesty for people here illegally with the following conditions:

1.) The wall must be built first, or, I'm open to an E-verify system with heavy penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants. But I like the wall - it will be a better way to control illicit activities.

2.) All illegals must apply for amnesty withing a set time period - 1 or 2 years.

3.) Any illegal immigrant getting amnesty can NEVER become a citizen. Their amnesty amounts to a permanent work permit. Giving them citizenship is an insult to all the people that did it the right way.

4.) Anybody caught here illegally after the amnesty grace period is up is deported. No questions asked, and no matter how many kids/family members they have here.

5.) No felons are eligible for amnesty

I'm up in the air about their eligibility for government assistance. I'm OK with it, but I would want some restrictions on their eligibility.

Any other conditions you would favor. Are there any of mine that you don't like?

None.

If you arent here legally, or in the process of doing so, then you cannot be here. Its that simple.

Its like saying, you can be a bank robber, but only in these 10 cities.

I see what you mean here, but why not treat them as if they got a Visa. You have to reapply in 3 years. After that 3 year period you have to get a green card. Then 6 years later you can apply for citizenship. If you live here legally for 12 years, just take the damn test and become a citizen.

Because they got here illegally. If they want to be a citizen, then they have to leave the country and apply to get in legally. I don't want to set a precedent.

I think that illegals living in the shadows is part of the reason they can't assimilate. They have to stay in the shadows and integrate with people who are like themselves.

If you give this group a pass that's a signal for more to come

If they are here illegally and working, we let them stay if they can find two Americans on welfare who are willing to take their place in Mexico.

There are an estimated 12 million people that prove you're wrong.

Apparently it's not as simple as you think.

I am against amnesty, but I could be for it if we then had an absolute ZERO tolerance for illegal immigration. Granny, Grandpa, children, sick Uncle Julio, Father Juan, no exceptions.

It would have to be perfectly clear that this is a one time thing. Has to have secure borders, severe CRIMINAL charges for visa over-stayers.

All illegals deported. Second offense - prison. No exceptions.

It's never a one time thing with liberals. They will just advocate for the next round of amnesty because of their feelings.

Never trust them when they make promises that "this is it". That is a damn lie.

I kind of like the idea of extending some sort of permanent residency status as the poster above suggested. If they want citizenship, they have to leave and come back in according to law.

What I'm not willing to do is ignore the fact that there are 12 million people here illegally and pretend like they can't be here. They can be, and they are. We have to face that reality before we can come up with a solution.
