People vote for the person running that is closest to their own thinking or, sometimes more appropriately, the least far away.
Sure, there are intellectual purists who vote for the guy with no chance, but most voters of either side are pragmatic about it.

I've seen the stupid assertion he parroted. Yeah. OK. The clerk said it wasn't Brown and EVERY major media outlet missed it.
Oh, but whoever the perp was, wore the same clothes that Brown was wearing when he died and had the same merchandise on him that was reported to have been stolen.
What an amazing coincidence!!!!
