Many state legislatures enacted term limits across the US over the past few decades. The practical observation has been that legislative members lack practical experience or working relationships with one another. More members arrive with partisan aims, but little understanding of how government or detailed legislation works. As a result, new members increasingly rely upon lobbyists and permanent govt employees for getting business done.

This isn't to say term limits have no merit, but they are not a total panacea in practical terms.

What do y'all think?

Sometimes "getting business done" is exactly what we don't need congress to do.

Passing Obamacare was "getting business done."

i am very worried about the unintended consequences of term limits. its scary how they think they could be fixing a problem, but in reality you make it significantly worse

We have term limits. It's called voting. Congress isn't a bunch of national elections like President.

How about impartial government employees who are impartial "liaisons" assigned to help with the organization, structure, and duties of being an elected representative? We don't need people to be in office for 30 years to get stuff done.

I think gerrymandering districts has done more to harm government than term limits.

We separate voters into two distinct camps and then then tell the candidates they vote in office to go after the other side. Candidates hardly work for the votes of the opposing party because their districts are either very red or very blue for the most part.

Often case districts use to be drawn based on geography and thus had the same economic interests, but when you see districts drawn strictly on party or racial lines you find that's no longer the case.

Look at La.'s congressional districts currently, and you'll see there's little logic to half of them.

Candidates don't work together because they are opposites. Few are sent to work with the other side.

What would y'all think about a system in which the incumbent was required to have a greater % of the vote after each term?

Applying term limits to Senators would reduce their power relative to the White House. If anything, they already bend over too much to inexperienced presidents already.

This has been the general observation of our Missouri legislature. I have a friend who is approached for donations regularly. He now asks each state legislature member when they solicit him why they voted the way they did on issue XYZ. They rarely have a good answer.

I have an acquaintance who ran for State house a few years back. We laughed and laughed. And then he was elected. And now, due to term limits, he's a state senator.

Why is it that so many people think that govt legislatures are supposed to constantly me making up laws?

Our govt was designed to make it hard to make changes.

It's hard for me to believe that this information isn't readily available via an internet search but if it really is that complicated then maybe just maybe the various government processes need to be simplified. Regardless, it should not take career politicians for government to work smoothly; if it does then we need to eliminate sources of crony capitalism aka lobbyists, etc.

Absolutely - fix the congressional districts into more cohesive shapes and see if that has the desired effects.

Great idea but won't happen. You would lose most of the minority districts.

The issue with this is the incumbent often keeps winning reelection because of name recognition. They also have more funds to campaign with due to the fact they have been in the machine for years.
