How did football come up with the name quarterback?

I think it has something to do with Rugby (quarterbacks, halfbacks, fullbacks).

The hot dog guy shorted him 25 cents, so he chased him down to get his quarter back?

lol. i have no idea. My gf just asked me why they call that position a qb, every other position is self explanatory, but not qb.

Bear Bryant invented it! Next?

I would say the best answer is its the forth back in the backfield.
Not the bad answer on Wik. 1/4 the way back humm? That isn't how football formations came into being.
By 1908 you had a Right Half, Left Half and a fullback with the QB.
In earlier football formations you only had 3 backs in the backfield, the fullback had handles on his pants so the Halfbacks could throw him over the line.
So I would go with the idea of the forth back over 1/4 the way back (remember there is no formation like this:
XXXCXXXX
....Q
..R...L
....F
Its more like this back then:
XXXCXXXX
...Q..L
..R..F
Remember any one of the four players would get the ball from center, in 42 LSU had Joe out there as QB but he was really a slot man and Steve was the blocking back and got the ball from center beter than 80% of the games.
But they also could be named Blocking back, running back, etc.

LSU ran a play like this in 07 and 08:
EXXCXXE
.R..<
.L
.F
Fenton is facing to backs, the backs are stacked behind the tackle 3 deep.
Its a misdirection play, it looks to be a running playing strong to the left or right; but one of the backs loops back to take the hand off from Fenton or Fenton or the back can throw on the loop.
Great play for early football, Wingard was ahead of the game.

I learned @ Bengal Belle 101 that the quarterback is 1/4th of the way back and therefore called QB. Also applies for the Halfback and Fullback.

Exactly, the positioning of Half Back and Full back was reversed. Meaning the positioning was at one point self explanatory, now it is confusing because of the role reversal.

DancinTiger here is the old formation used in early football that was outlawed:
.........C
........XXX
.......XXFXX
.......X...X
That is the flying wing.
When they made the rule of 7 men on the line, everyone started to run this formation:
.....EXXCXXE
............W (lines up on strong right or left)
.......RFL
That is the formation used to throw the Fullback over the line, it was outlawed and that is when you get a QB and the first formations are like this:
.....EXXCXXE
............
......RFQL
very close to a T formation, in this line up the ball went to any of the backs from center, then you have the T, a single wing and box all coming out around 1905-06:
......EXXCXXE
.........Q
........RFL
Thats the T which was upgraded many times over the next 25 years.
Single wing:
.....EXXCXXE
..........Q.W
.......T.B
Pop Warner came up with the single wing.
The Box:
.....EXXCXXE
.......Q.F
.......R.L
this is the formation Notre Dame's Knute Rockne later changed to what is call the Notre Dame shift around the late 10's (1917-18).
Also like I posted above you have Wingard's stack formation we used in 1907-08-09 and 1910:
...EXXCXXE
....R..<
....L
....F
Notice in all the early formations the Quarterback isn't in what looks alike an I or pro I formation, so the the so called 1/4 the way back is a quess by a bad poster on Wik. is wrong.
Also many formations didn't have a QB in early football it was called the Wingback, Blocking back, etc.
