After a year of playing, my 360 finally RROD'ed. I went through the online repair process, got the box, shipped it back, and only 5 days later I have my new working 360 with a month of free XBL.
I have heard a bunch of horror stories about it taking weeks and weeks, so maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe they're doing things differently.

They should have the process down pat by now.

I hope mine goes as smoothly - I sent it in on Monday and I am already feeling a little withdrawal.

Did you have to send the original reciept with it?

No - they just looked up the serial number on the box to tell when it was manufactured I think.
I had never even registered it before this and they didn't give me any trouble.
I did not have a RROD mine was doing this and I was beyond the 1 year from manufacture date warranty so I am having to pay $99 for repairs (which kind of blows) but it could be worse. Also, they said that, no matter what the problem is they will fix if for $99. If it can't be fixed they said they'd send me a new one.
I'm hoping that's true and I'm hoping that it doesn't take too long. I'll let you know.

Mine has done fine for over 3 years now. No problems whatsoever, now my original xbox went out and i sent it in , but then i bought two more to replace it if it ever pulled this crap again. I just might buy a back up 360 as well set up with a different GT. and set it up in the kids room just in case.

Same here i figured since I didnt have my fricking receipt from 2 years ago they would shaft me. They asked for the serial and it was all gravy just need to send it off.

What does the serial number tell them, just when it was purchased?
Is it on the box or the console?

But they asked me for it. I assume it has something to do with manufacture date because they told me my 1 year warranty from manufacture date was up (I knew that already, I've had the thing more than a year).

Thats odd I know I have had mine more than a year

Yeah, I'm not sure how it works but you had a RROD right? I'm pretty sure that there is a 3 year warranty on that, my problem was that I didn't have the RROD it just fricked up in another way.
If I had the RROD it would have been free. I thought about dropping it or something to try to make a RROD but thought better of it
