How are they in general? I'm thinking of one as an e-reader and maybe to replace my wife's ipad 2 that barely works.

i have a friend who loves his. i don't think they are as good as a new ipad, but they also aren't $700+. imo it is not a good replacement for an e-reader if you already have one. won't be as easy on the eyes.

If for reading only, spend $20 and get a paperwhite.
I went from an original fire to an iPad mini. Picked up a Paperwhite a month ago when I got a new iPad Air from work. Its night and day difference on reading.

My work is updating my ipad 2 to an air also. My wife said she doesn't use her ipad enough to justify a replacement so I'll pass on it.

Thanks for the heads up. I picked up one for the wife. I like the paperwhite better, but she is interested in the audible read along option the Fire has.
