PS4 Game Data Help

So I've had my ps4 for about a month now. I turned it on today and all of my saved data for multiple games and even the whole game download for "The Last of Us" all disappeared.
I have ps+, but I didn't save any of my files on the cloud, nor did I do a backup save.
I'm not so much worried about the data that was lost as much as I am with it happening again. Anyone know why this happened or how I can avoid it in the future?

I think the Playstation 4 uploads game saves by default (Unless you have changed that)
