Looks like they need to beef up the reserve training program. How can you make such a careless mistake? RIP to the victim, talk about a senseless way to go.

quote:

Authorities identified the shooter as 73-year-old reserve deputy Robert Bates and said he meant to use his stun gun.

This is just ridiculous.

It's not first time that it's happened either.

What kind of a threat would someone impose that is handcuffed with a stun gun anyway?

I mean, if the perp is getting rowdy and they are going to tase him to calm him down.

But #1, I don't get how you can mistake a taser for a pistol.

And #2, none of the other cops around him thought to say "You know Fred, you don't need your gun there, pal."

Some cops are dumb asses that couldn't handle a real career so they turn to a government job. The ones I know are extremely insecure and get off on the power trip.

So the guy was in handcuffs and the cop somehow thought he was holding a stun gun? What kind of a threat would someone impose that is handcuffed with a stun gun anyway?

Read the article and watch the link before you make ridiculous comments.

The man was not handcuffed. He was tackled in the street by an officer and they were struggling on the ground. The officer was trying to get him to roll over when the shot was heard.

quote:

The video of the April 2 incident shows a Tulsa County deputy chase and tackle Eric Harris, 44, whom they accuse of trying to sell an illegal gun to an undercover officer.

A deputy is heard telling Harris, "I need you to roll on your stomach." At about the same time, a woman is heard in the background saying, "Stop fighting."

While the deputy is subduing Harris on the ground, a gunshot rings out and a man says, "Oh, I shot him. I'm sorry."

Authorities identified the shooter as 73-year-old reserve deputy Robert Bates and said he meant to use his stun gun.

Harris screams, "He shot me. Oh, my God," and a deputy replies: "You f---ing ran. Shut the f--- up."

And that sucks, because I'm good friends with several cops that take their jobs very seriously. There are tons of good cops.

Police unions need to start distancing themselves from the idiots in their ranks.

Reserve deputies are generally volunteers, often with other full-time jobs. Bates is an insurance company executive assigned to the Violent Crimes Task Force.

Uhhhhhh....

quote:

Tulsa Police Sgt. Jim Clark, who investigated the shooting at the request of the sheriff's office, concluded that Bates had been under the influence of a phenomenon known as "slips and capture," which occurs when a person's behavior "slips" off the intended course of action because it's "captured" by a stronger response.

The frick does this mean?

Have people always been this disobedient to cops or is this more of a recent trend?

To be fair, the reserve officer immediately expressed remorse for his action as soon as the shot went off. I tend to believe it was an honest mistake, but that doesn't mean he is innocent of any wrongdoing. It may have been a mistake, but it cost a man his life, and there should be repercussions.

Why do we have a 73-year old armed civilian running around under color of state law?

When suspects stop running from the police.

(and) When the media stops taking race out of the story, so never.

Should read:
quote:

A reserve sheriff's deputy thought he was holding a stun gun, not his handgun, when he fatally shot a suspect during an arrest that was caught on video in Tulsa, Oklahoma, police said.

Instead of:
quote:

A white reserve sheriff's deputy thought he was holding a stun gun, not his handgun, when he fatally shot a black suspect during an arrest that was caught on video in Tulsa, Oklahoma, police said.

Wrap your mind around a 73 year old, likely pretty well off dude willing to volunteer then getting himself into this mess. Ugh.

That's just sad. There was no reason whatsoever for a taser to be fired.
