Looking to root my LG G3, was leaning toward CM 12.
Any tips or tricks for rooting the G3?

Just rooted my Verizon G3 last night and been tinkering with CM12 for the last few hours(worked nights).
It's ok. Some nuances that I'm not used to compared to the stock rom.
Not sure what carrier you have, but there's several different ways to root the Verizon model and it gets pretty confusing when reading all the different processes.
I'm currently downloading a couple of different ROMs based on the stock Lollipop rom but debloated and with many mods and features. One uses Aroma Installer so I can configure and customize what I want/don't want installed as I'm installing it.

I have Verizon as well. I found a script on XDA for rooting the device.
It's been awhile since I've flashed a ROM though.

I used stump root to root. Had issues rooting.
I recommend using philz recovery. Download the recovery zip to your computer. Extract the zip and move the "recovery.img" file ONLY to your phones internal storage.then download an app called Flashify. This will allow you to navigate to the img file in the app and flash it. Once installed you can download any rom of your choosing in a zip format to your phone and flash them from Philz recovery.

I'm running CM11 on the HTC M7 until they get a stable version of CM12 up and running. I've tried the nightlies in the past and don't feel like going through those growing pains again. (hint: the latest one isn't always the best)
I wish there was another stable Lollipop ROM available, though.
