Who do you think are the top Rushers?

Mike Mayock's most recent Top 5:

1. Dante Fowler, Jr.

2. Randy Gregory

3. Vic Beasley

4. Bud Dupree

5. Shane Ray

I think Bud Dupree has the potential to make the biggest immediate impact if he's in the right situation. He has great size, he's quick-twitch, extremely explosive. I thought he had the best game of any Pass Rusher vs. La'el Collins this past year. Fowler was neutralized, and often dominated by Collins and Dillon Gordon.

I also think Danielle Hunter can be a good Edge Rusher in the right system (I admit to a hard LSU bias).

Seems like "edge" is the new corporate buzzword for the NFL draft

Yeah, but I think it's a good word for specificity.

"Pass Rushers" can include inside players, who don't usually put up the numbers that outside players do, but in context, you could rank inside players on a list of "Pass Rushers".

I think it's actually a word used for less specificity

They are too lazy to define which guys translate best to certain defensive system so they label every OLB/DE and some DTs as "edge players" so they don't have to break it down any further than that

Bud Dupree
Do not want. I see red flags with this guy on two fronts: He's slow to diagnose, and he has below average instincts. That says to me that he's an athletic freak, but not a natural football player. All the measurables (hgt, wgt, 40 time) in the world don't mean jack if you can't play football. I'm not saying he can't play. I'm saying he's not worth the #13 pick.

quote:

WEAKNESSES Tall but not long. Wins with athleticism over skill at this point. Some scouts believe his instincts are below average, leading to hesitation. Will get caught taking bad angles to the ball. Needs to improve hand fighting. Still raw rushing the passer. Doesn't possess a go-to pass-rush move. Appears to lack urgency in-game.

SOURCES TELL US "He's a little slow to diagnose, which causes him to get a late start on plays. I would ask him to drop into space in zone dog looks and that's about it. To me, he's a pure see 'em, get 'em 3-4 rush end." -- NFC East regional scout

I disagree. I mean, Mayock is diligent in his evaluations.

Of course, Edge could be broken into OLBs and DEs, but a lot of guys are hybrid-types who can play both, and I haven't seen any DTs listed as "edge players". (Unless maybe someone was referring to a 3-4 DE?)

Gregory is the most naturally gifted pass rusher in this draft.

The opinion part is. The part in quotations is from the OP link.

Oh, I'm not necessarily saying he should be taken that high, but in the right system, he could make a big impact right away, and I'd give him a serious look as the top guy if I needed a Rusher. I think the inconsistencies might be more of a focus issue than an instincts issue. There were a few times where he got by La'el extremely quickly. I never saw any other DE/OLB do that during La'el's career at LSU. That's just one game, but it shows what Dupree can do vs. elite players when he's focused.

I've seen every UCLA game for years, and I'm telling you this guy is not worth a 1st round pick, especially in a 3-4 defense.

He's an athletic freak (he looks like a body builder IRL), but I never once had the feeling while watching him at UCLA that I was watching a future 1st round pick. Plus he's had surgery on BOTH hips, so he's a medical risk. I like him in round 2 for a 4-3 defense (he's a natural RDE in a 4-3), or round 3 for the Saints. That's taking the lack of position and his medical history into account.

Eric Kendricks otoh is a football player. He's a little small for round 1 IMO, but I won't be too unhappy if we take him at #31. I'd much rather get him at #44 though. He's definitely better than any ILB the Saints have.
