quote:

This week, 30-year-old Russian man, Valery Spiridonov, announced that he will become the subject of the first human head transplant ever performed, saying he volunteers to have his head removed and installed on another person’s body.

quote:

At the time, it sounded completely outlandish - and it still is - but the difference now is that Canavero actually has a living, breathing volunteer willing to be the guinea pig for what Christopher Hootan at The Independent says is predicted to be a 36-hour operation requiring the assistance of 150 doctors and nurses

quote:

A Werdnig-Hoffman disease sufferer with rapidly declining health, Spiridonov is willing to take a punt on this very experimental surgery and you can't really blame him, but while he is prepared for the possibility that the body will reject his head and he will die, his fate could be considerably worse than death,” says Hootan.

quote:

There’s no telling what the transplant - and all the new connections and foreign chemicals that his head and brain will have to suddenly deal with - will do to Spiridonov’s psyche, but as Hootan puts it rather chillingly, it "could result in a hitherto never experienced level and quality of insanity".

this was a great beverly hillbillies episode, when granny was going to have jethro and mr drysdale switch heads.

I think it ended with that classic Moneyman commercial

Anything that can improve the quality of our insanity is a plus.

If it worked as well as science is capable of right now, would he still not be totally paralyzed? You can't reattach a severed spinal cord, can you?

Somebody help me with the science behind this. When they sever valery's head, what will keep it "alive" before it gets fully connected to the donor body?

Seems like once it's detached it would basically shut down and that'd be the end of it.

So if this works, are people going to jump in line to switch bodies with people?

This sounds like a very cheesy horror movie plot...that or the beginnings of Futurama

Seems like it would be a good origin to a super villain.

We all will die.

Might as well try to make history doing so.

We don't have the tech to do this. We are probably 100 years (very optimistic) away from tech to make this possible.

You can't reattach the spinal cord to make it work.

Also where the hell are they getting a body for this? It seems like the number of deaths that allow a body transplant would be pretty low, with brain hernia, stroke, or being shot in the head. It's not like they can keep the body on ice for months on end.
