I believe the proof is in the pudding. Payton is still gainfully employed and Mike Smith not so much. Payton's penalty challenge aggressiveness shows confidence in his staff and his aggressiveness in 4th down decisions shows confidence in his players ,even if he isn't always right. This is what convinced me of his kamikaze nature. LINK

I can agree with this. As a fan, I love the aggressive approach he takes. For every TE end around on 4th down, he has 2 great gambles like the onside kick or Brees diving over the pile for a TD against Miami. When you have this style of coach, you just have to accept that he will make some boneheaded calls; but you can't ask him not to be aggressive.

However last year some of the aggresive calls were because the team was not responding.To me some was a sign of a overall weak team.
