In lieu of a military draft, everybody in the USA should be required to serve two (2) years as a waitress, waiter, bar back or bartender during the ages 18-24.

I work in retail and all the stories I hear from service workers...we get the same thing. Some people think just because you work in retail or you're a service worker, you are an inferior human being. The worst is when the customer thinks they know how to do your job better than you. I'm a professional. I've been doing this for 14 years. I take pride in my work.

I think that would be the difference between a waiter and a waitress. Server is applied to both sexes. You know, like fireman is for men but firefighter can be man or woman?

A for effort though.

From experience. Don't do that again. If they want it. Put it in. They can bitch about the bill later

Neutering the language like this should be avoided whenever possible

LL I was nice to you a while back because some old man was chewing your arse. Never be rude to people who handle your alcohol.

You should have not mentioned the upcharge. You should have taken his order, served him as if you aren't doing him any favors...(with a smile). Give him his bill after making sure he is taken care of. Never ever say "NO Problem" as a server. I say this having worked as a bartender/server for several years in and after college. I get so pissed when a "server" acts like they are doing me a favor to serve me. Hopefully you will use this as a learning experience.

I do the same. It tells you a lot about a person.

I never say anything to anyone and don't alter the tip, but God I can't stand this as a response. I'm paying you for a service. I don't really care if it's a problem for you or not.

He then goes to tell me that hes ordered it 3 times already from the restaurant and begins to go on a rage-raises his voice to say "you know what, frick it cancel my order" throws his silver ware on the table, and gets up to walk out. At this point I guess he had an epiphany to share a little wisdom and yelled "you want a tip? Quit working in a restraunt and go get a real fricking job". Then storms out.

Something else was bothering him that day. He was being a real jerk clearly.

I'd have just put his order in and let him worry about the bill when he gets it. Did he look like someone who would complain about the bill? Maybe he took you mentioning the price as a judgement of his appearance.

I say "no problem" all the time and never realized how literal people take it until I saw some woman on facebook ranting about guys who say it when they hold the door open for them

Didn't really think of it like that. Like I said he was nice when he first sat down and I greeted him. Demeanor changed after I asked if he was ready to order.

Sounds like he was having a bad day but if you tell that story to every table you have in the future they will feel bad and give you at least an extra 5% in tips when you average it out so use it to your advantage and congrats on the raise, just always tell the story like it JUST happened.
