Also read on Reddit that HBO had 160 lawyers on stand by for the premier last night. Expecting major lawsuits.

Maybe, I don't know. I'm sure the LAPD doesn't want an army of private investigators following them and looking for skeletons in the closet

They say she's alive, that's good enough for us

It probably isn't too hard to get some dirt on the LAPD.

Miscavige just looks like the biggest butt munch.

The good news is that active membership is in decline.

I hope this gets put up for a Oscar nomination for Best Documentary next year...and I hope Cruise and Travolta are in the audience.

I've been of the belief for some time that Tom cruise jumping on a couch is the beginning of the end for them. Their $3 billion in assets isn't going anywhere, but I think for the first time people who didn't know or care to know about Scientology thought "my god, that guy is fricking insane, what is Scientology?"

Over the last 10 years organizations, writers, etc. have been less and less afraid of challenging them.

People here know Greta can Susteran is a scientologist right? She's a fricking lunatic.

Not sure what they could sue for. They'd have to prove that all 10, or however many were interviewed on camera, were all lieing.

Surprised one of the members at one point haven't beat that short fricks arse. Dudes is a total fricking psycho dbag.

Cruise or Travolta could take that "church" down.

They don't sue because they have any standing to, they sue because they want to put you in the poor house

Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson) is a Scientologist also.

Wiki has a partial list of some of the celebrity members: LINK

I am sure a great deal of 160 lawyers were there to vet the film before releasing it. They didn't want to give the churches lawyers an inch.

I think it will die out eventually.

It only takes either Tom Cruise or John Travolta to bring that entire church down.

But you know...

I don't know why people assume that. If they left, they'd be ruined. It's not like they have some new information to share with the world. How could they bring them down? I think when more people know what they actually are, it will crumble.

Too many people assume it's a whacky religion. It's not a religion of any kind.

I understand how people can get caught up in the idea of the dianetics and getting over your past through discussing it. That part makes sense to me just like therapy makes sense. I almost empathize with people being drawn to that. However, they record and use the personal information revealed in those “audit” sessions to hold these people hostage. They also influence them in this most vulnerable state. If it was therapy it would be clear cut medical malpractice, but since they frame it as a “religion” it’s not prosecutable.

What REALLY blows my mind is the seemingly educated people that buy into the whole “Xenu” story and look past the fact a fricking Science-Fiction writer (not to mention criminal and fraud) wrote their origin story and canon. Its baffling that millions of 1st world, rich, educated people have bought into this. The non-famous members are treated like shite too.

Every time you peel back another layer of the Scientology onion, you find something more ridiculous. The whole thing is a big WTF.

What makes me so irritated is that people just assume they're a whacky religion and DO NOT UNDERSTAND AT ALL...why everyone find them so reprehensible.

They just spout off that they're no crazier than any other religion despite not knowing one fricking thing other than the word xenu

I guess I meant that if they left, that would sort of be a catalyst of others leaving. Cruise and Travolta seem to be the most public and recognizable figures in the "church". Perhaps it would damage that sense of "legitimacy" for other members.

Yeah I'm not religious at all, but the equivalent would be a priest extorting you for what you say during confession and stealing all your money systematically while knowing what they're teaching you is bullshite.

And yet HBO Jumoed through 5 million legal hurdles just to air this documentary

It would be naive to ignore how destructive they can be. I know that's not happening, but HBO was overly cautious for a reason

HBO was very smart to get in front of it. Why not avoid the legal battle of their careers if they can?
