I went to an airshow in NOLA last year that had a B-29 (Fifi). There was an older gentleman there that had served on a B-29 crew. They had copies of his journal from the war describing most of his bombing missions and I got to speak with him for a few minutes. It was an awesome experience.

I think that's one of the last remaining B-29s still in flying shape. I'd love to get to see her up close. Did you get to look around inside?

Yeah... I have tons of pics. They had several other WWII era planes there. I know there was a P-51, pretty sure they had a B-17 and a B-24.

You can pay to ride in most of them. I think it ranges for a couple hundred bucks for the bomber seats up to a couple grand for the P-51.

This is the link: Commemorative Air Force

They'll probably be back in NOLA later this year.

From what I have read the B-24s were shite and would always crash, at least according to the Unbreakable book.

I'll be back there this year. The planes were constantly flying around. Just to look up in the sky and see those things flying around is unbelievable. I might have to save up for a ride.

I was planning on taking the family down to Tuscaloosa this weekend for their air show. The Blue Angels are supposed to be there again this year. But this air show in LA looks to be on a whole other level. What time of year do they have it?

The dates aren't on the website for the stops later in the year... but I was looking at the prices on the B-29 rides and under that it shows you can book a ride in NOLA on Oct 22-24 so I'm guessing that's when they'll be here.

My pics from last year were taken on 10/26 so the dates match up.

Yeah probably so... but it's Fri, Sat, Sun. Drive in early Sat morning and drive home after. Or get a hotel and stay in NOLA, hang out Sun then drive home.

There was a B-17 there too... Texas Raiders:

B24 had longer range and a heavier bomb load, but was harder to fly. B17 was more durable.

I went to an event at the WWII Museum where Lester Tenney spoke about his experiences in the Bataan Death March and being held prisoner by the Japanese. He's coming back soon to do another speaking engagement. I would recommend going.

He wrote a book called My Hitch In Hell.

"The Courage to Remember:
PTSD—From Trauma to Triumph"
Thursday, April 9

US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center

Captured after the fall of Bataan, Lester Tenney survived the infamous Death March and three and a half years in Japanese prison camps as a slave laborer. His is an inspiring survivor's epic about the triumph of human will despite human suffering. His first book, My Hitch in Hell, is widely acknowledged as one of the best personal accounts of the Death March and ensuing captivity. In his second book, The Courage to Remember, Dr. Tenney addresses the question: How can you free yourself from the oppression of the past and the imprisonment of your mind?

I got to go inside the B-17 and B-24 during the Wings of Freedom tour a couple weeks ago. I feel bad for some of those gunners.

Saw them several years ago. I had no idea how cramped those things were until seeing them in person.

There were signs with some of the specs of the planes including top speed set up by each plane. Saw an old guy looking at the one for the B-17 muttering about: "bullshite. Maybe in a nose dive..." and started talking to him. Sure enough he flew on B-17s in the 8th Air Force. Shared some awesome stories and that was much better than seeing the planes.
