Just past the midway point of the 2014 NFL season, Michael Sam is not with a team and has not made an active roster. While some apologists claim he's just not good enough for the NFL, many others in and outside of football are scratching their heads as to how this could be happening to a man who 12 months ago was being discussed by some as a possible first-round draft pick.

With every week that passes featuring mediocre players taking the field for NFL teams, and various clubs showing no ability to stop the pass, the reasoning for the NFL's collective snub of Sam becomes more and more clear:

Michael Sam is not on an active roster today because he is openly gay.

quote:

With Sam being cut halfway through the NFL season and without ever stepping on the field during a regular season game, I think it will be a while before we see another player come out publicly. There just isn't much upside and the perception will linger that by being out, Sam hurt his draft status and chance of landing on a team.

That perception is hard to shake:

Sam was the SEC co-defensive player of the year in 2013. Yet he was drafted in the seventh round, 249 out of 256 players selected. That's three rounds and 124 players later than what bookies set his draft order at. It's also by far the lowest any SEC defensive player of the year had been drafted in at least a decade.

quote:

The first openly gay football player drafted by an NFL team intimated that that was the case when TMZ caught up with him Wednesday morning at LAX.

"I think I was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year last year," Sam cryptically told the gossip website when he was quizzed about why he's not in the league, "... so I don't think it had to do with talent."

quote:

I've seen a little too much insistence this week, online and on social media, that Michael Sam's being cut from the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad had nothing to do with his being gay. It's a bit overwrought and defensive. A lot of fans seem to want to believe the NFL is not a homophobic institution, and that the Sam story somehow proved it: The NFL gave a shot to the first openly gay player ever drafted and treated him well, and his fate was based on his performance, and that's that.

But Michael Sam's being gay has been so much a part of this story from the moment he came out, with anonymous NFL executives saying he wouldn't be accepted, and some commentators and even some players making anti-gay remarks, right up through his late-round drafting and beyond. Can anyone really say for sure whether or not his being gay had anything to do with his being cut?

just excerpts from a random few googled articles, including a quote from sam himself.....but hey you're probably right no one ever said anything about it....

It has nothing to do with him being gay. You find me a 4.3 runnin', play-making cocksucker, and that dude will land on a roster. Michael Sam fricking sucks and I wish he'd just go away

I blame ESPN and the national media for creating the monster that is Michael Sam's ego.

I acknowledged that, you must have missed it, that's on you. Don't get all in a huffy at me cause you whiffed and are now pointing out something I did in my very 1st post.

1 was from Sam himself, the others were just random quotes, you really showed me!!!

I googled "michael sam blackballed"... the 1st 2 searches that came back were from Tiger Droppings, and the only 2 actual articles about Sam being blackballed were from out.com and outsports.com.

Not sure how else to tell you you were wrong, there was a lot of talk just on MSB about how the backlash wasn't nearly what everyone thought it would be, but here you are storming in saying it otherwise.

you said no one believed sam was cut because he was gay, I posted several articles of people accusing teams of doing it, I don't see where your confusion lies.

I don't believe I ever said massive backlash, but you can change the argument if you wish.

I think the point is that most around here figured the "liberal media" were going to string up the NFL when Sam was released, and it never happened. Same with Jason Collins and the NBA.

well the problem with sam is that he got 2 chances and was terrible. i wouldn't be shocked if the media also spread the word about sam's diva-ness. he was just not the guy to make the argument. it would have blown up in their face.

I said I didn't recall anyone in the media doing so. I didn't think I'd have to point out when I say media, I meant mainstream media. I figured you'd assume that.
