It has been on my mind for a while now and just wanted to hear thoughts from those of you who have been out there. Are you still allowed to camp out there? What's the best time of year to go? Is the trout fishing really as good as I hear? I'd like to make a trip out there this year if possible.

My dad and his friends used to go every year from the 70's until the early 90's.

I get so jealous when I see their old pics. I've never been. The closest I've been was when Hardhead and I fished out on Battledore Reef in Breton Sound one summer.

Been out there once a few years ago on a guided trip in October (big boat). Had a blast. Caught Reds and Specs.

Was going back last Fall when weather canceled the trip.

The summer time pompano fishing is magic. As for camping, I'm sure you could. I don't see how anyone could tell you otherwise. We camp in the biloxi marsh 3 or 4 times a year so I say go for it.

How far and/or difficult is the run from shore? I see people taking mother ships out there and pulling bay boats/skiffs. Is this the way to go?

No, as the last info I have you are not allowed to set foot on the islands. There really is no one there to enforce it but that is the law do to bird nesting. LINK

The Chandeleurs are my favorite place to fish when I have the time for the run from Biloxi, and yes the trout fishing there can be great.

There are several outfits that run charters down from the MS coast both day and overnight LINK LINK among others.
as well as a barge that is generally there with overnight accommodations LINK

As far as time of year, that would depend on your target species, I have caught cobia out front of the islands all summer, flounder are pretty good spring and fall, redfish pretty much year round and trout in the spring and summer. I can't speak to the winter as I avoid being wet and cold in a boat offshore as much as possible and spend my time in deer stands and duck blinds.

I've done the trip in a tiller skiff. The weather was just too good to pass up that day. Made the trip in a bay boat plenty of times. Like with anything else you have to be aware of the risks and know your limitations.

Are you sure about this? Pretty sure the nesting areas are clearly marked. I've never heard of not being able to walk the beaches.

Come on man, from where? and in what?

I have seen many a bay boat there, I have also seen bay boats there unable to go home because of weather changes. I would plan my trip by the weather forecast and pick the most sheltered route available in a bay boat but it is certainly doable.
It is possible to stay in protected water MOST of the way depending on where one launches from.

Not sure honestly. He pays a certain amount a year with 6 other guys and they make a handful of trips each year.

I'm trying to find out more info. Of course he joins this group right after buying a new boat

Not really sure where. I'd like to the do the overnight charter if and when I can plan it.

ETA: as far as the beaches go, I was told that it was shut down for a bit after oil spill but is back open to the public

I have also been wanting to do this. I can never get excited about camping in Louisiana once it warms up, though. I'd rather go on a mother ship or sea plane.

Just checked out the website for DueSouth. Looks pretty legit and not too bad of a price for 10 people

This is what I was told, they are off limits do to reduced nesting areas available from erosion and oil spill B.S. from March to August.
Not saying I follow it but the OP is informed.

I was talking to MF the other day about doing this this summer. He said he talked to some guides and the best time to go is July-August.

Look into staying on the Pelican, take your own boat and just use the accommodations.

I have never seen where the post spill ban was lifted. I will ask someone who would know this week.

Where I would launch from greatly depends on your boat.
