Freddie Highmore *is* Norman Bates. He is almost perfect in this role. The same goes for Vera Farmiga as Norma. The supporting players are also all excellent. Now it's on to season three.

I agree the acting is great but I feel letdown this season.

I was concerned that they would have trouble keeping it interesting AND believable this season. It has just gotten better IMO.

The casting is the main reason I had high expectations for the series when it was first announced, they have actually exceeded my expectations.

I just finished season two as well. I've put off watching it probably because I thought it would be widely disappointing...I was wrong. Nothing is or will ever be Hitchcock, but Bates Motel is one hell of an effort. It does Psycho justice, which is to say it does the greatest horror film ever made justice. You are right about Highmore but for me, Vera Farmiga is absolutely top notch. She is asked to do a lot with her performance and she delivers every time. She makes for a great Hitchcock movie mother.
