We saw what had to be about an 800lb bluefin jump about two miles out of south pass, cutting through those mullet and hardtails.

It's the only fish in the gulf that I haven't caught, that I wanted to. But, we don't start fishing until June, so most are already heading north.

To the OP:

I like Tiagras. If you are on a budget, Shimano TLDs are great reels, too. I've fished TLDs for a couple of seasons while charter fishing for marlin and they held up just fine. They are light, and easy to handle while stand-up fishing.

No, I know him, though. I run private sportfishers and yachts.

We are just getting into the offshore world. We were looking for some bigger reels that we could troll with / bottom fish. Mainly needed the higher drag rating. Ended up getting 2 okuma 50w to start off with. They were only 140 a piece, and for something g that will only get used 2x a year, should fit the ticket.

Accurate makes a fine reel, but personally prefer the Tiagras or the old 2 speed Fin Nors.
Fun fishing 50 LRS or 80's, but tournament time, break out the 130's.

What kind of boat do you run?

I have a Worldcat 266SF center console. The trip where we got spooled on the 80w we were on a 46' Bertram. Left out of Cypress Cove and spent the weekend around Ursa, Mars. The only three things we could think of that could of spooled us that quick are a mako, bluefin or on hell of a marlin. I believe we had just hooked a bonita when all hell broke loose. This was last July

For bottom dropping, the Tekota is a less- expensive reel. I've hauled a ton of big muttons and grouper up with mine and it's still chugging along.
