I think their relationship is as synergistic as it gets in sports. They both make each other better than if they were with another QB/HC.

Better now.

Drew won the Saints a Super Bowl. He can do whatever the frick he wants.

This is true and he deserves every penny, but fans have to also realize that paying a 36 year-old QB that much money will make it harder to build a better team overall.

It was a great run, but, IMHO, it is OVER.

I can see season ticket sales dropping back to a 40k per year average.

SO, it's not a question of whether Brees is greedy. The question is whether he will part with his own personal money in order to help the Saints remain a Superbowl contender OR whether he will be content to keep all of his money and perhaps watch the Saints fall back to its apallingly inept losing ways of almost all of its history.

That's the question.

If I were Brees, I can't say for sure that I would give up my own personal money in this situation. There's every reason to think that the money I give will not be well-spent by the front office.

I can see the Saints going around 8-8 and missing the playoffs for two more seasons with Drew leaving the Saints after that. I'm pessimistic, but, that seems like the most probable scenario to me.

Ed Daniels is arguing against a straw man.

I don't think anyone ever has said Brees isn't worth what he's getting paid as compared to the rest of the league...or that Brees hasn't been worth the investment monetarily to the franchise.

What some people are saying is that in the twilight of his career, it's reasonable to think that Brees would/should consider taking less money to have one more chance at making a run for a championship. Now, I don't think that's necessarily a fair statement either...but it's certainly not absurd or lacking perspective. Hell, Peyton Manning is doing the exact same thing this year.

It's just a lazy opinion piece from Daniels.

What makes it hard to build a contender is CSP's inability to part with inadequate coaches (Vitt, McMahon, Johnson), giving out big money deals to guys that get traded a year later, get hurt, or become locker room cancers, poor drafting, and awful cap management.

The state of this team has very little to do with Brees' contract.

it isn't greedy to get the biggest contract possible. that's just business.

the problem, though, is that he undoubtedly knew that his contract would mean that the team would have less to secure/retain talent around him. "greedy" is the wrong word, but for the amount he's due, it's completely disingenuous to consider him free from criticism for salary cap issues to which his and every other players' contracts are linked.

I'm probably all talk, and I'm sure they all say this until the time comes to get the money, but if I was a top QB I'd want to take like 3-5 million a year and have heavy say in who we sign. That's plenty + if I'm that good I'm gonna be bringing in the endorsements. Then we just sign the most OP offense ever and I basically cakewalk to titles every year while saving up money until I retire happily as the GOAT.

Or I'd see all the 0s they offer and sign for $20,000,000. Hard to say til you've been there, but as someone who isn't, I'd much rather take on field success.

Also the collective whining from opposing top QBs would be delicious, as now I've pressured them into either doing the same thing or looking selfish as I stomp their asses year in and year out.

That said, I have no problem with Drew's salary. I wouldn't mind it being a little less, but can't deny that he is worth probably even more than we pay him.
