Seriously though this is the first game in a long time that it creeps up on bed time and I don't want to quit.

This is a great game. Not perfect, but I put in about 6 hours today and I might be about 5-10% through the game. Plus, they're already working on a DLC for this. When I think of those who spent $60 on a 5-hour game (The Order), I certainly am getting massive great gaming for the buck.

And wait until the modders sink their teeth into this...

I'm about an hour in and it is everything I've been hoping for. It's a great deal like the old Baulder's Gate/Icewind Dale games, but with a much more lenient combat system.
The small interludes between scenes are fantastic as well.
The writing is on par with Dragon Age so far.
The sound design is marvelous.
The scenery is great.
The character creation really makes you think about how and who you want to play as giving a great detailed account of everything that you are choosing from.

I'm currently playing as a Monk Death Godlike and its fun as hell.

Well, for starters its not nearly as action-y. You aren't plowing through 100's of enemies every screen. Attacking must be very well thought out and planned. Where as Diablo uses a very basic rule set for damage (Weapon Damage + Primary Stat), PoE uses a much more dynamic rule set akin to the first Dragon Age game but more in depth.

All attacks in Pillars of Eternity go through the same attack resolution system. Each attack can result in Critical Hit, Hit, Graze or miss. The likelihood of each outcome is based on the difference between the attacker's accuracy vs target's defense values and can be effected by various abilities.

An attack roll represents your attempt to strike your opponent and resolved by a single d100 roll(a number between 1 and 100). The attackers chance to roll Critical Hit, Hit, Graze or miss is determined by the difference between his Accuracy value and the relevant defender's defense: Deflection (direct melee and ranged attacks), Fortitude (body system attacks like poison and disease), Reflexes (area of effect damage attacks), and Willpower (mental attacks).

The Default ranges for an attack roll are:

01-15 = Miss (attack has no effect)
16-50 = Graze (-50% damage or duration)
51-100 = Hit (standard damage and duration)
101+ = Critical Hit (+50% damage or duration)

Certain class are capable of shifting those default values.

You also have to rest between numerous encounters as fatigue will set in upon your character. Fatigue is bad news if not settled quickly as the stat penalties are almost insurmountable in tougher battles.

Just watched a little on twitch. This seems to play a lot like dragon age origins. Am I right?

I would say no. It's more like Baldur's Gate 2015 with a different system than D&D.

If you played BG, BGII, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, basically any infinity engine game then you'll feel right at home.


This game to me feels like an old friend who I haven't seen in awhile. It's only poetic irony that it will be absolutely amazing outside this weekend and we have this epically awesome RPGfest in our hands. Goodbye world for the next few days, hello....What's this world's name?

Thank you for this suggestion. I had to turn off sound effects because of that bug. From what I'm reading there are various bugs out there. I hope Obsidian is working hard to get them fixed.

I played for a couple hours yesterday and there are definitely somethings you learn to let go of in those first few hours.

Like:

Letting go of the fact that not every companion is going to survive the journey.

Not every place/enemy you run across is meant for you right now. Clear what you can and move on. Get a full party together asap, even hire mercs (toons you design) at the inn.

I'd say it's more of a mix between DA:O and the old Baulders Gate games. It's much more combat friendly than BG, but not as much as DA:O.

Forget quest markers too, you have to remember where people are. WoW players would hate this.

As far as bugs go, I still haven't run into any. I'm playing the GoG version though. Everyone else with problems using the Steam variant?
