Looking to build a garden in my back yard, but I have some questions first. I'm thinking of using (2) 2x10x10 pieces of lumber cut in half for the box. I would like to grow some herbs, tomato and peppers to begin, but i'm open to suggestions. Figured I'd start small at first. My backyard slopes, so there is no flat ground, how big of a problem will this be? Do I just fill the box with top soil or do I need a liner too? will my 2 pieces of wood be sufficient enough?

I used cinder blocks with no liner. If its small stay away from viny plants or definitely have a plan to deal with them. I dont have a ton of time so Ill just be doing different peppers this year.

Fill it with potting mix.

No liner

I use a mix of top soil, some type of manure mix, blood meal and top with leaves

so the box will be 8x2? or 5x5?

a tomato plant will get huge, so just remember that

some easy herbs are rosemary, thyme, sage...almost impossible to kill them

basil will grow well but goes to seed quickly, same with dill

do not plant mint in your garden, it will take over

peppers will thrive anywhere

What type of tomato? Generally speaking 5'x5' will be okay for 1x tomato plant.

Do not plant tomatoes remotely near peppers.they cross pollinate and you will have hybrids and not the good hot tomato type but the tomatoey jalaps, Habanero, and bhut jolokia.

Not sure what type yet because I haven't gotten that far yet. however, I will be sure to plant the tomato and peppers on opposite sides.

I'm assuming I would have to till the grass/ground that would be under the raised bed?

No need to to till the ground or buy a liner, I laid down wet newspaper (it was actually dry when I laid it down, then I wet it with the hose) before I put my soil in.
